  1. Amazing--you've just described every jazz bbs on the planet. But, no, people don't "shut out" jazz because of annoying jazz fans, they don't listen because they don't like it or don't like it enough. It ain't rocket science.

Did you ever catch Haig & Jimmy Raney at Gregory's?

  9. I don't think any potential rights issues would stand in the way of preservation & digital transfer.

  11. My guess is that any subject that's in Britannica will have a well researched and community vetted Wikipedia entry that's just fine. I think the dangers of shoddy work or possible misinformation on Wikipedia generally come in the obscure entries that aren't well reviewed by other contributors. http://news.cnet.com/2100-1038_3-5997332.html

Angry Squire was in Chelsea, 7th Ave. & 23rd. I gigged there once with Joel Forrester & Dave Hofstra shortly before they closed. Pianist Alan Kamen did the bookings toward the end. It was a bit of a dive, but Dakota Staton and Jaki Byard often performed there.

  14. I'd guess the famous 1911 edition would fetch a nice price in good condition. It is available online for free. http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Main_Page as well as on Project Gutenberg.
  15. Even if Bud doesn't solo, that's an odd oversight.

Nothing of his on Spotify. When I typed Clarence Shaw it asked if I meant Clarinet Shaw, and when I typed Gene Shaw it asked whether I wanted Gone Show.
  17. Is it possible that Pullman never mentions the 1946 session with Sarah Vaughan, or did I just miss it somehow?
  18. Nelson Goerge's Motown book has been mentioned, but I'd add his Death of Rhythm and Blues.
  19. The good news is that there new drugs out or in the works for macular degeneration. http://www.webmd.com/eye-health/macular-degeneration/news/20051017/new-eye-drugs-treat-macular-degeneration Anyway, re: cataracts, everybody I know who has had the surgery has had no ill effects and excellent results.
  20. This is one of the most significant moves in the transition from print to digital since the advent of the e-reader.
  21. Ah, but if Reig had recorded that session when he was with Savoy, surely the man who ruined Jimmy Scott's career (Lubinsky) wouldn't have let Reig just take them, n'est-ce pas?
  22. Ironic, since the book was one of the major vehicles that helped to inspire support for the abolitionist cause. It had been long suspected that the Roost sides were backdated for who knows what reason, bragging rights?, so Pullman's "revalation" was not news to me.
  23. Allergies, more than a month earlier than last year.
