Someone released a caiman (essentially a small crocodile) into the Harlem meer a few years back. And then there was the guy with the tiger in his apartment uptown last year. Actually, I know a guy who had a "pet" cheetah on the upper west side - not by choice, but as the result of an army prank. I met him after the cheetah had passed on, but evidently it was a great pet (not that I advocate keeping wild animals).

I've seen footage of an anaconda eating a crocodile, but they are a bit bigger.

Besides being the best musician in the history of rock, Jimi was by far the most stylish.

I third the cat recommendation. When I first took in my cat (he was a stray), I was living in a totally disgusting mouse and roach infested apartment (it's tough living in NYC on a grad school stipend). I had tried the electronic devices and the poisons - neither had an appreciable effect. After I started keeping the cat, any mouse that came into the apartment was nearly instantaneously consumed. I was astonished by the cat's ability to sense the presence of a mouse, and I was grateful to see that he didn't leave a mess. There was literally nothing to clean up. Not only did he eliminate the mouse problem, he made a noticable dent in the roach problem. He didn't eat the roaches, but he'd kill them either by swatting them with a paw or by chewing them and spitting them out. Fortunately for me, I have been out of that place for over a year now and live in a completely pest-free apartment. But I think my cat misses the mice.

I seem to recall that Domino's was a major contributor to Operation Rescue in the early 90s, although I no longer know the source for that information. Well, here is some info: http://www.snopes.com/business/alliance/domino.asp

As I recall, Domino's funnels a lot of money to anti-abortion causes.

There is no data to import. The files are all scanned images. I guess you could try OCRing, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

I ordered it from Amazon in early July and it still hasn't shipped yet. I've heard from someone who actually has it that the search feature is very limited, however. Evidently it only searches article titles and abstracts. That's a bit of a bummer, given that they adverstised it as "fully searchable". But for $63, I'm not going to complain too much (once I finally get it, that is...)

Four to one, Beefeater, two or three olives depending on their size, lightly chill the glass by filling it with ice cubes while shaking up the booze.

About to pull the trigger on a Powerbook...

Word on the street is that they will (finally) roll out the update at the Paris expo next week. From what I've heard, it is not expected to be an earth-shattering update - the processor on each model will be a few hundred MHz faster, but that's about it. -
Unfortunately, this festival occurs on my block. It starts on the 15th and goes for ten, long, noisy, smelly days.

Searchin a new monitor for my Mac

Three grand (or so) is way too much for 90 dpi. Why do monitor manfacturers invest so much in improving marginal stats on monitors, and (apparently) none on improving the most important stat of all? I'll never understand that. Oh, to answer the question, I will third the opinion that Dell is the way to go. -
The new BP up the block from me is advertising $1.95 for regular. Of course, it hasn't opened yet...

I've been using this because it makes me laugh every time I boot my computer. It looks like the kangaroo that would corrupt all the young kangaroos - "Hey kid, c'mere. Let's go find some booze and easy women!"

I won't be truly impressed until someone comes out with a 250 dpi monitor. But that's still pretty nice. -
God I hope this story is overblown right now!!!

William Gray has very little credibility. He has always been one of those obfuscating the "debate" on global warming, attempting to create the illusion of controversy where there is very little. While I admit that I can not prove it, I'd be willing to bet a *lot* that he is deep in someone's pocket. -
That was my experience as well. Did the first 7 in about 10 minutes, and after fidgeting with 8 for a few minutes I started feeling guilty about wasting time.

It's not clear to me that electric cars really solve any environmental problems. They just lead to a lot more coal being burned.

I'm with you on the hour-long episodes, but I also have to say I really gained a new appreciation for the earliet 30 minute episodes after getting the box set. It's all great stuff. BTW, when you decide to get the box sets, Digital Eyes has the best prices. I got the box of the hour-long episodes for $100 and the box of the half hour episodes for around $50-$60. The prices were way better than what Amazon was offering. I like The Prisoner too, but I do have to admit that I liked it a lot more when I was 19 than I do now.

The last two episodes are what really make that series. There are several good episodes on the way to the last two, as well as a few sleepers. Overall, I think Danger Man was a better series. But I don't think I have a lot of company in that respect.

About to pull the trigger on a Powerbook...
J Larsen replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My opinion is based a few things: 1) The school year point 2) the fact that they tend to update the Powerbooks twice a year and the last time was six months ago and 3) having followed Apple closely for a long time, I know that they tend to update one line after the other pretty quickly, and within the last several weeks they've upgraded the iBooks, the iPods, and the Mac Mini. The smart money says the PowerBook will be next. (I also ocassionally get a little inside info, but not lately. ) BTW, if you're not doing anything seriously computationally intensive, and if you aren't doing any video editing, the new iBooks compare quite nicely with the existing PowerBooks, especially for the price. Personally, I wouldn't want to sink too much into Apple hardware right now with the Intel switch on the horizon. -

You would reap the same type of benefits from any large-scale scientific research effort. A serious effort in fusion power, for instance. Even our feeble effort in that regard has produced technology and materials that benefit the everyday life of the average citizen.
