  1. But the name might be worth it. Look at the number of page visits per day. I don't think google cares much for YouTube's video content at this point. Yep. I bet almost the whole amount is booked as goodwill.
  2. Have to remember to pick up this month's Wire there tonight (if they still have it).
  3. They want to shut down the stores within 6 weeks. I imagine they want to shut down the larger stores with higher rents and more workers more quickly.
  4. Just saw this thread today and ordered both sets. I've heard the Jones set before and know that I want it... not so sure about the Mulligan. If it ends up not being my thing, I know I can easily find it a new home.
  5. There is only one standard that has always irritated the hell out of me no matter the performer or arrangement... Girl from Ipanema
  6. I can't believe I didn't hear about the Bad Brains and Patti Smith shows until today - I would have jumped on those tix in a hearbeat...
  7. Yeah, and now that I've been thinking about it, $75,000 is an EXTREMELY low estimate for their rent. I know two people who own restaurants in the area, both are a tiny fraction of the size of Tower and in prime but not quite as prime locations. One pays $20,000/month, the other pays $35,000/month; both signed their leases in 1999 or 2000. And, of course, the tiny CBGB space, which isn't in nearly as good of a location, is going on the market for around $30,000. It's hard for me to guess how much they are paying for that space, but on further reflection I would think it is well into the six figures. I'm actually a little curious... maybe I'll look into the bankruptcy documents if I get bored at work tomorrow... Part of what killed the 4th and BWay location is that it was largely dependent on sales to NYU kids, who of course belong to the download demographic big-time.
  8. I've been in the 4th & BWay Tower at least once a week every day since early 2000 (it's very near my apartment). There is no way in hell they have been making their rent (probably around $75,000/month) the last few years. In the late 90s, there was always a line at the checkout counter. The last few years, there have been an average of about 10 people shopping in the store when I go in.
  9. I looked around at the 4th & BWay store yesterday - I'll miss it because it is just a few blocks from my apartment, but 10% off their regular prices was still a worse deal than J&R. If they go to 25%, I'll do some spending.
  10. I was recently in SF and tried to drop in on my childhood (years 5 - 13) best friend, only to find out that he had commited suicide a few days earlier. I learned that his father, Al, has been putting videos of himself playing the ukulele up on youtube - this is a song that he did as a tribute to his son: Al hasn't moved since I was a little boy (he's still in the building I grew up in) - I have a lot of memories of that living room he's in...
  11. I'm not Clem, but I am sure about Beck being a Scientologist.
  12. I'm pretty sure "The In Sound from Way Out" was borrowed from an old Perry & Kingsley record (awful album, as I remember it - a lot of it got used for incidental music on Sesame Street). For no particular reason, I always liked "My Life in a Hole in the Ground" by African Headcharge. I also thought ONoffON was a clever title for Mission of Burma's reunion record.
  13. I totally agree - the oiginal ECM is a masterpiece... that recent Nonesuch version just kills it... in trying to perhaps warm it up a little, they made it sound like Music for 18 Musicians with saccharine added.
  14. Yeah, I'm leaning towards getting it. I went in thinking I was going to buy a G&L Legacy, but the shop owner insisted I give the Campbell a shot - it had a different, but good sound and made the Legacy feel bulky by comparison (and I've always liked playing strats).
  15. Guitar Man on Ludlow. It's not a place to get a deal, but they carry nice stuff and are unusually helpful.
  16. About $1300 (including NYC inflation, so maybe a grand anywhere else). One of the main things I like about them is that they are incredibly light, which is important because of back/shoulder injuries I've had.
  17. Has anyone played Campbell guitars? I tried one today... found it very comfortable, but it seemed like a lot of dough for a brand I had never heard of before.
  18. Must be talking about Sripraphai.
  19. She Said She Said still sounds like it could have come out last week.
  20. I think there is clearly some secret, harshly-enforced law that says you can never give these types of awards (Nobels, Genius Awards, Pulitzers, etc.) to the "right" people except under extraordinary circumstances. The one exception seems to be in the hard sciences, where surprises are very rare (although the 1999 and 2000 physics Nobels were stunners - 1999 in a good way...)
  21. They're not using G5 chips in anything anymore, are they?
  22. Written on a condom machine: "Don't buy this gum - it tastes awful." Also: "People in glass houses shouldn't throw orgies."
  23. How the hell did that much fecal matter get on the spinach supply?
  24. I haven't heard the album yet, but if what you are saying is true then Dylan has acted unethically. Guy The documentary that came out about him last year did not portray him to be a very ethical person in general.
  25. Not so sure I'd want it in my backyard, but that's a beautiful animal.
