  1. Four to one, Beefeater, two or three olives depending on their size, lightly chill the glass by filling it with ice cubes while shaking up the booze.
  2. Word on the street is that they will (finally) roll out the update at the Paris expo next week. From what I've heard, it is not expected to be an earth-shattering update - the processor on each model will be a few hundred MHz faster, but that's about it.
  3. Unfortunately, this festival occurs on my block. It starts on the 15th and goes for ten, long, noisy, smelly days.
  4. One can only hope this is true.
  5. I have a tremendous fear of heights when there is any possibility of falling (I can't stand anywhere near the edge of a roof that has no rail, but I have no problem leaning against the window in my 34th floor office), and a strong fear of large insects/spiders. I'd rather be locked in a room with a tiger than a huge bug.
  6. Three grand (or so) is way too much for 90 dpi. Why do monitor manfacturers invest so much in improving marginal stats on monitors, and (apparently) none on improving the most important stat of all? I'll never understand that. Oh, to answer the question, I will third the opinion that Dell is the way to go.
  7. The new BP up the block from me is advertising $1.95 for regular. Of course, it hasn't opened yet...
  8. I've been using this because it makes me laugh every time I boot my computer. It looks like the kangaroo that would corrupt all the young kangaroos - "Hey kid, c'mere. Let's go find some booze and easy women!"
  9. I won't be truly impressed until someone comes out with a 250 dpi monitor. But that's still pretty nice.
  10. William Gray has very little credibility. He has always been one of those obfuscating the "debate" on global warming, attempting to create the illusion of controversy where there is very little. While I admit that I can not prove it, I'd be willing to bet a *lot* that he is deep in someone's pocket.
  11. That was my experience as well. Did the first 7 in about 10 minutes, and after fidgeting with 8 for a few minutes I started feeling guilty about wasting time.
  12. It's not clear to me that electric cars really solve any environmental problems. They just lead to a lot more coal being burned.
  13. I'm with you on the hour-long episodes, but I also have to say I really gained a new appreciation for the earliet 30 minute episodes after getting the box set. It's all great stuff. BTW, when you decide to get the box sets, Digital Eyes has the best prices. I got the box of the hour-long episodes for $100 and the box of the half hour episodes for around $50-$60. The prices were way better than what Amazon was offering. I like The Prisoner too, but I do have to admit that I liked it a lot more when I was 19 than I do now.
  14. The last two episodes are what really make that series. There are several good episodes on the way to the last two, as well as a few sleepers. Overall, I think Danger Man was a better series. But I don't think I have a lot of company in that respect.
  15. I was a big Husker fan at one time. They sort of lost me at Candy Apple Grey. One of these days I should go back and give Warehouse a second shot. Back then I probably just wanted to hate it for being on a major. The Minutemen were the best band ever on SST, IMO.
  16. Happy birthday!
  17. My opinion is based a few things: 1) The school year point 2) the fact that they tend to update the Powerbooks twice a year and the last time was six months ago and 3) having followed Apple closely for a long time, I know that they tend to update one line after the other pretty quickly, and within the last several weeks they've upgraded the iBooks, the iPods, and the Mac Mini. The smart money says the PowerBook will be next. (I also ocassionally get a little inside info, but not lately. ) BTW, if you're not doing anything seriously computationally intensive, and if you aren't doing any video editing, the new iBooks compare quite nicely with the existing PowerBooks, especially for the price. Personally, I wouldn't want to sink too much into Apple hardware right now with the Intel switch on the horizon.
  18. You would reap the same type of benefits from any large-scale scientific research effort. A serious effort in fusion power, for instance. Even our feeble effort in that regard has produced technology and materials that benefit the everyday life of the average citizen.
  19. Agreed. I have a long winded diatribe abouut this in the politics forum from sometime last year. It is telling that no shuttle experiment has ever produced a peer-reviewed paper (unless maybe you count an article or two on the "misguideness" of the crystal growth experiments they used to do up there...).

  21. You may have been entitled to get some cash back. The day that a new product is released, Apple slashes the prices on the predecessor product. They also have a (little-advertised) price protection program - it's good for something like 30 days. The caveat is that I'm not certain that the price protection program covers discontinued products - my gut tells me it probably doesn't - but if you find yourself in this situation again, it would be worth looking into. BTW, you can bank on a PowerBook update very soon. I wouldn't count on anything earth-shattering, but you'll probably be able to get a marginally better machine for a couple hundred bucks less within the next month.
  22. BTW, given that Apple is saying that they will have converted their entire line to pentium processors by the end of 2007, buy knowing that Apple is likely to have some backwards compatibility issues in a couple of years. From what I've read about the Rosetta stone solution, it sounds like it will be annoyingly slow.

  24. I like Sunday Monrnin' and Solid. To be perfectly honest, Green Street isn't a favorite of mine.
  25. Happy bee-lated b-day, J Larsen! I coulda swore I went to high school witcha. ← Which high school?
