  1. I love the Coen brothers, but I've tried three time to get through that film, and can't do it.
  2. Theoria is great, so is Double Trouble II, where Irene shares piano duties with Marilyn Crispell - a nice contrast in styles. These are the only examples of her playing I have, though, so far.
  3. An exaggeration, perhaps, but so many ideas, so beautifully executed. One of those albums that is so satisfying that I've not felt the need to hear anything else by the artist - anyone suggest another Stitt album that would demonstrate the folly of that atitude?
  4. Constellation is one of those LPs that spoils you for anything else.
  5. Cop-out. So, for example? Two with/by Haden I'm particularly glad to have : Ornette's 'Change Of The Century' and Haden/Metheny's 'Beyond The Missouri Sky'. Have you heard those?
  6. Bacon and eggs - 2 or 3 rashers of dry-cured British back bacon, grilled, and two poached eggs, one slice of bread and butter, mug of tea.
  7. B3 - what about sticking a link to this excellent site on your links page - www.bagatellen.com - and asking Joe Christmas/Al Jones to reciprocate?
  8. Thanks for taking the trouble, Chaney - beyond the call of duty.
  9. Ah, thanks - from both me and Dusty Groove. The trouble with new discoveries is it's hard to resist the urge to buy everything at once.
  10. What's the opinon on Bap-Tizum and Fanfare For The Warriors? I've seen copies of the Four Men With Beards LP reissues at reasonable prices.
  11. Still not yet. Maybe this weekend
  12. This music survives any damage done by the remastering: I grew to love it from a highly noise-reduced CD, but glad to have the Centennial set, the main mistake of which seems to me to have been a determination to use the original metal parts even when they were damaged a little beyond acceptability; but even with Jack The Bear the fidelity still justifies the effort - I'd take this version over any other I've heard except the one I've got on a comp of JRT Davies-remastered stuff. I'd like to hear a good vinyl version of this music, but RCA version is pretty good to my ears (and good bass too).
  13. What Universal may be waiting for is to see if Gilles Peterson's involvement brings in enough interest - I hpe it does, but I don't think it will. The Redial Tubby Hayes discs were put on the main display in the Cardiff Virgin; Joe Harriott did not get the same treatment.
  14. Yeah! We wanna see who's got beards!
  15. I'd like to make it, but you seem to be holding it inconveniently in the States. I'd like to see pictures though - will anyone have a digital camera? Hey Joe - suddenly you're all over this board!
  16. The dub effects give it a nice extra flavour too. I was lucky enough to see this band live at last year's Cardiff Worldport Festival - as good as you'd imagine it to be. I think I waxed lyrical at the time.
  17. Well, maybe, but Lewis was singularly lacking in grace with his post-fight comments; and he pisses me off talking about himself in the third person - idiots do that.
  18. Probably. To hear the effect for yourself just swap the +ve and -ve terminals at BOTH speakers - I still haven't got around to trying it, myself. Some hifi components reverse polarity - this is usually stated by the manufacturer if it's the case.
  19. Two of the British contingent haven't made it here either: John Connolly and Mike 'Bring 'em on!' Bryan.
  20. I swapped a few burns and exchanged a few emails with him last year - an interesting and knowledgeable correspondent.
  21. Circumstances mean it's headphones or nothing for me at the moment, but you should keep the volume down. Don't buy the Grados unheard unless you can return them, or, at least, exchange them - I liked them for their openness and 'live' sound, but found them a little too harsh on saxes and brass so returned them - they are NOT 'neutral' to my ears, whatever the magazines say.
  22. If we can't give us audio, at least tell us what accent you've got: Prince Charles? Paul Gascoigne? Jimmy Tarbuck? Ahh! To wallow in nostalgia for the old board: who was it suggested we send flowers to the Japaneses chap who remastered the TOCJs; who was it that said Stacey Kent sings like she does 'cos she's got a small head?
  23. Pass me the bottle when you've finished with it.
  24. This is why you should fear people with large heads: Sperm Whale - 'In the head of the whale is an organ called the spermaceti. The whale can use this as a kind of "sound lens" in order to focus an intense beam of sound energy on a specific target (like a squid, or a fish). The explosive "crack" sound is enough to stun or kill the animal. The sperm whale will then slurp the prey down whole and, in some cases, still alive.' Source. Cripes!
