I would highly recommend all of the SteepleChase titles with the exception of one, "More Than You Know", avoid that one like the plague. Listen the the sound samples on AMG and you'll see what I mean. "Go", "Getting Around", "Dexter Calling", and "Our Man In Paris" are my favorites from the Blue Note years. On Prestige, I like "Tower Of Power", "More Power", and "Generation" with Freddie Hubbard. LTD is my favorite TS player.............

Delta Music also has a 2CD set with the Miles/Stitt concert. The transfer on these CD is very good, and they're cheap. http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/hnum...azz/rsk/hitlist I'm only interested in the trane concert of mar 20-21 1960

Looking for the Miles Davis March 21 concert at Olympia Paris w/Trane............

organissimo wants to play in YOUR TOWN
mrjazzman replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Jim, you have to come to the left coast. and why go to southern calif. l.a. and san diego, come to the beautiful san francisco-oakland bay area of northern california. Yoshi's at Jack London Square in downtown oakland is the place to be. don't have any personal contacts there but i'm sure i could drop off a demo tape if you send me one................. -
Just rec'd these from Mr. Tanno. Thinking most jazz-funk is dated, listening to "If" was a very pleasant surprise, the funk does not drown out or overshadow the jazz. The music on "Suite For Dr. Martin Luther King" is very poignant and is reflective of the man. IMO not as good as "Happy Girl & Hip Walk" or "I'm A Fool To Want You" and "Rules Of Freedom" but very enjoyable. Wondering what "Makatuka" and "Sixth Sense In The Eleventh House" sound like..............

Rec'd 4 cd's from Mr. Tanno, "If", "Suite For Dr. Martin Luther King" by Dr. Nathan Davis, and "Jimmy Smith At The Organ Vol.'s 1 & 2" and purchased 4 from Amoeba Records in Berkeley, CA "Manchester Concert Complete 1960 Live At The Free Trade Hall", "Live In Zurich", "Live In Den Haag", and "In Copenhagen" by the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane..............

To all you experts out there, what cd's should i purchase to have the complete music from the 1960 Miles Davis-John Coltrane-Sonny Stitt European tour. the ones with the best sound quality. There seems to be previous releases plus new releases of the same music.......HELP

60's hardbop trumpeters in 'progressive' contexts
mrjazzman replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists

Never heard of Fusco, just listened to sound samples of Big Man Blues, am going to purchase that as soon as i finish writing this, he definitly puts a fresh spin on the ship that I LOVE, as i said before, i will pass on aram shelton, can't hear that stuff...........
-
just listened to sound samples from "Arriv", im afraid i'll have to take a pass on that one.........
-
I should have mention Jesse Davis along with Vincent Herring, I own all but one of his cd's, seems to record a lot in europe, doesn't seem to get a lot of exposure.......
-
Has anybody heard the album/cd "A Caveau" by Jeff Gilson? How does it sound. The reason I'm asking is because Dr. Nathan Davis is on the set............
-
I am in total shock that after reading this entire thread Vincent Herring is mentioned only 3 times (unless I missed something). Although I could hardly describe the comment as effusive, kudos to catesta. the other 2 endorsements were made in passing. Cannonball Addict, how could you have that handle and also be an alto sax player and not mention Vincent Herring. For my money he is the best of the young alto players on the scene today. Natrually, in the begining (because he idolized cannonball) he was a cannonball clone but now has his own voice still heavily under cannonball's influence. recently he was at Yoshi's in Oakland with cedar walton and i missed it dammit. he was born a few miles south of san francisco in vallejo, ca but of course relocated to new york some time ago.....

Esther Williams???????

Is this the same Stan Tracey from the set Playin' In The Yard with Charlie Rouse?

I saw moody earlier this year at Yoshi's in Oakland. Joey DeFrancesco was there and was supposed to be with Jimmy Smith but Jimmy died a couple days earlier so who showed up in his place? Moody at 80 years of age and not looking more than 60 and can still blow ts and flute.............

im so busy working and listening to all my dead guys, I don't have the time to throughly check out the cats playing today. Because his acknowledged influences are George Coleman and Dexter Gordon(my favorite ts player)I kind of like Eric Alexander. He's got a new one out with Vincent Herring(which would have been my #1 choice if you'd included alto sax players)called Battle, Live At Smoke and although I wouldn't expect them to sound like ammons and stitt, or lock and griff, alexander's half of the solo on blues up and down left me wanting a little more. IF(and that as we know can be a huge IF) he ever reaches his full potential, alexander will be a great one, own 5 or 6 of his cd's. Saw him with mabes, coleman, & joe farnsworth last year at Pearl's in San Francisco. he seemed a little stiff but overall sounded very good. inbetween sets we had a few words about Dexter. Saw coltrane recently with bobby hutcherson, didn't move me at all, struck me as being average at best. just bought my 1st james carter cd, live at baker's keyboard loung, sorry folks, im taking that one back, maybe i'll check something else by him, but so far he's losing me, i hear gimmickry in his playing.......
-
couldn't agree with you more, perfectly stated although i have a little more than a borderline admiration for eric alexander, own 5 or 6 of his cd's

I was around when 'Saxophone Colossus' was released and - along with a lot of people - was taken over by the sheer brillance. Same thing with John Coltrane's first albums. And then when Albert Ayler's 'Spiritual Unity' exploded. Is there any album by one of the current saxophonists that hit you in the face the same way those did in their time? I have not but would love to hear one. ← brownie, the answer to your question is an emphatic NO, the genius' you mentioned sadly have no counterparts, and there aren't any equivilant artists on the scene today, and yes, we'd recognize such, WHEN WILL THE NEXT BIRD COME ALONG?????????

Anybody have the LP Oh, Rock Live (1953)on Natasha by Lionel Hampton. Brownie, Gigi Gryce....you can see the rest of the band at amg.com. Anybody heard it or have it.........

Golson told me one night last week that blakey didn't want to do blues march("I don't want to do no march")until golson convinced him that it was a blues and that everything would be alright. It turned out to be one of their biggest hits. Golson had just joined the band and had convinced blakey to let him be it's director.........
-
i've been told that blakey has said timmons, golson, morgan, and merritt was his favorite or best messenger group. can anyone verify that?...............

i can always appreciate a picture of love.....................
