The McLean has 'It's Time','Action','Consequence','Right Now','Jacknife', and 'High Frequency', which is a '66 quartet date. ← i have everything except High Frequency, can't find it in the usual places.........

had to share this heart pounding experience............. just exchanged email with benny golson. he and my dad Elmon Wright were buddies and bandmates in both Dizzy Gillespie and Earl Bostic's bands. of the bio's ive read, they don't go into this period in any depth. What a genius. He could have had a fabulous career off of his writing alone not to mention his stellar tenor sax work. He remembered me, my sister, mom and aunt from when the band visited San Francisco MANY years ago. He is scheduled to appear at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA in March. Guess who will be in the first row of seats.............. my favorite 3 Golson sets are: Groovin' With Golson, Gettin' With It and Gone With Golson

Have you heard him on Jackie Mac's "New Soil"? I LOVE "Greasy" ! ( written by Walter Davis Jr.) Jackie McLean - Sax (Alto) Donald Byrd - Trumpet Paul Chambers - Bass Walter Davis, Jr. - Piano Pete La Roca - Drums Track Listing: Sweet Cakes Davis Cup Greasy Formidable - (bonus track on CD) Hip Strut Minor Apprehension ← yes, i own that cd, but i think my favorite by d.b. set is "Chant", he's amazing on that set and so is the greatest baritone saxaphonist ever pepper adams

i like mike but for my money joey defrancesco is THE best on the planet in spite of his comments about organissimo. im sure you've listened to The Champ, The Champ: Round 2, The Philadelphia Connection: A Tribute To Don Patterson and others. his brilliance shines on sideman sessions also such as The JazzTimes Super Band. but joey please drop the trumpet and the singing.......

There must be at least three or four versions of Koko played by c.p. groups. Can any of you bird experts out there tell me which version is being played on the soundtrack for the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley. Thank you.........

Here's what's up with that. It's a session I did for my own production company in 1961, at a time when Howard was having a hard time generating interest from record companies. I wish my budget had allowed me to rent a better studio, but I've heard worse. Musically, Howard did not let me down. The other players are George Coleman, Junior Mance, George Tucker, and Jimmie Cobb. I eventually sold the master to Alan Bates (not the actor) and he leased it to Fontana before putting it out on his own label, Black Lion. ← is the title to the set "Sharp Edge"?

I have this disc in my collection, thanks..........
-
To all you beboppers in the know, which would you recommend, "Trumpet At Tempo" or "The Complete Savoy & Dial Master, Leader Sessions". Doesn't seem to be much difference in the titles. Thanks............
-
marvin 'smitty' smith, don't like his style of drumming at all..........lewis nash is 100 times better
-
this is a nobrainer, milt jackson because of the blues.....................

another one of my dads gillespie bandmates have gone to that big band in the sky. i THINK joe gayles and dave burns are the only ones left...........

HELP........I have 1530 cd's and counting. I like to keep them in alphabetical order. im constantly almost on a daily basis adding new cd's and have to re arrange the entire collection each time. i need an expandable storage system where i can stick a new cd in its alphabetical spot with touching the other cd's......thanks

i think it was MartyJazz that turned me on to "Big George". mighty fine set. don't think its on cd. of course i love his work on maiden voyage and with max roach, if you like the hard bop blues like i do, check his alto sax solo on Kin Folks from Lee Morgan's 1957 set on blue note, City Lights. although im glad this master is still alive, after seeing him at Jazz At Perals in S.F. earlier this year with Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern, he's erratic and i think maybe its time for him to hang up his ax, drinks a lot.....................
-
i was recently attacted on this forum for my opinions, im not going to do the same to you, you have a right to your opinions. i don't agree with you, i think pjj was a mainstay of the hard bop movement with others of course..........
-
no brainer, buddy rich. add his personality to his drumming and you get the total picture...........it takes one asshole(artie shaw) to recognize another asshole(buddy rich) and i hate drum kits. tony williams, elvin jones, art blakey where are you..........
-
just discovered I have mr. kilson on i remember by diane reeves, will have to give that a listen, not sure i'd put bill stewart in between two masters like jones and haynes
-
beboptrumpeter, i should have included dejohnette. what iyo is his most difinitive work leader or sideman. will have to reasearch kilson and stewart

My favorite drummers are in order, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Higgins and Art Taylor. Of course there are many others that I like a lot such as Jimmy Cobb, Charlie Persip, Louis Hayes, Alan Dawson. Of the young lions, my favorite is Louis Nash and I like Jeff "Tain" Watts a lot. What say you...........
