  1. It's funny, there was a time when I would have agreed with you, but I feel like I've grown to appreciate later Trane much more than I used to. I feel the content of his solo on ODOU is harmonically and thematically very rich. Do I listen to this period of Trane all the time? No, it can be exhausting (but exhilarating). most of the time I need to be in a specific mood. I also love hardbop Trane, but I don't think his later recordings do a "disservice" to his earlier stuff. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. Do you feel that way about Miles? Freddie Hubbard? Ornette? ← i don't know, i guess im getting older, but nowadays im entrenched in hard bop probably because hard bop is an offspring of the blues and the blues can never be dated. as we all know it's a matter of opinion and listening taste. believe me, I LOVE trane but in 2005 the avant-garde thing just sounds dated to me. ornette i could never get into same with eric dolphy can't get into his solos maybe with the exception of his work on the blues and the abstract truth. blue train, miles work prestige and columbia, bethlehem work, giant steps, crescent, the prestige box, the atlantic box, that's the trane i love, of course i love coltrane live at birdland, live at the village vanguard, but the stuff after elvin and mccoy left(they got tired of the unstructured noise)i can do without...........
  2. i agree with you 100%.........
  3. no, it's not just you, i think his avant-garde period 40years later sounds like a bunch of noise, Coltrane Live At Birdland hooked me on jazz at the tender age of 15, i was even digging SOME of the avant-garde stuff, but like i said 40 years later it sounds like a bunch of noise and does a disservice to his GREAT hard bop period
  4. Jazzbo, you're not telling me you don't like The Blues And The Abstract Truth, a set that Scott Yanow calls(and of course I agree with him) "a true classic"........are you????????
  5. I just played the JJ Johnson vinyl after cleaning the LPs on the VPI cleaner and - wow - what a great set ! Don't miss this, Mosaic lovers... ← I was torn between stitt and johnson, you just made up my mind and probably the johnson will go oop first, what do you think........

  8. The McLean has 'It's Time','Action','Consequence','Right Now','Jacknife', and 'High Frequency', which is a '66 quartet date. ← i have everything except High Frequency, can't find it in the usual places.........

    Benny Golson

had to share this heart pounding experience............. just exchanged email with benny golson. he and my dad Elmon Wright were buddies and bandmates in both Dizzy Gillespie and Earl Bostic's bands. of the bio's ive read, they don't go into this period in any depth. What a genius. He could have had a fabulous career off of his writing alone not to mention his stellar tenor sax work. He remembered me, my sister, mom and aunt from when the band visited San Francisco MANY years ago. He is scheduled to appear at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA in March. Guess who will be in the first row of seats.............. my favorite 3 Golson sets are: Groovin' With Golson, Gettin' With It and Gone With Golson

  13. Have you heard him on Jackie Mac's "New Soil"? I LOVE "Greasy" ! ( written by Walter Davis Jr.) Jackie McLean - Sax (Alto) Donald Byrd - Trumpet Paul Chambers - Bass Walter Davis, Jr. - Piano Pete La Roca - Drums Track Listing: Sweet Cakes Davis Cup Greasy Formidable - (bonus track on CD) Hip Strut Minor Apprehension ← yes, i own that cd, but i think my favorite by d.b. set is "Chant", he's amazing on that set and so is the greatest baritone saxaphonist ever pepper adams
  14. i like mike but for my money joey defrancesco is THE best on the planet in spite of his comments about organissimo. im sure you've listened to The Champ, The Champ: Round 2, The Philadelphia Connection: A Tribute To Don Patterson and others. his brilliance shines on sideman sessions also such as The JazzTimes Super Band. but joey please drop the trumpet and the singing.......
  15. There must be at least three or four versions of Koko played by c.p. groups. Can any of you bird experts out there tell me which version is being played on the soundtrack for the movie The Talented Mr. Ripley. Thank you.........

    Monk

Are there any differences between "The Complete Blue Note Recordings"(which I own) and "Genius Of Modern Music, Vol.'s 1&2. The titles seem to be identical. Is there a difference in sound quality?
  17. just read an email from my brother in new york that joe gayles, stalwart tenor saxsohonist with Dizzy Gillespie's bebop big band(the best ever), passed away over the weekend. He looke very well and in good shap when my brother and I visited him in new york in june '04............
  18. Here's what's up with that. It's a session I did for my own production company in 1961, at a time when Howard was having a hard time generating interest from record companies. I wish my budget had allowed me to rent a better studio, but I've heard worse. Musically, Howard did not let me down. The other players are George Coleman, Junior Mance, George Tucker, and Jimmie Cobb. I eventually sold the master to Alan Bates (not the actor) and he leased it to Fontana before putting it out on his own label, Black Lion. ← is the title to the set "Sharp Edge"?
  19. I have this disc in my collection, thanks..........
  20. To all you beboppers in the know, which would you recommend, "Trumpet At Tempo" or "The Complete Savoy & Dial Master, Leader Sessions". Doesn't seem to be much difference in the titles. Thanks............
