Jim - Have you looked into the Artist Share route? I would think you could get a few of us here to sponsor you. Kevin

Actress Brittany Murphy has died...
Kevin Bresnahan replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
If you can, find her last pictures from the Tt Collection's Popup show. I would bet Anorexia Nervosa. She looked like she weighed about 60 lbs. So sad. -
Back in the early to mid-90s, I saw Bruce with Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters and liked what I saw from him. He was really a straight blues player back then, but he swung those blues a lot like Jimmy Smith. I caught him with his own band at the Regattabar in Cambridge quite a few times and he always put on a great show. His set list was almost always straight blues, which suited me fine. He had a nice tenor saxophonist with him back then... what was his name? Tom Hall maybe? I don't think I've caught him in over a decade. I wonder if he's still living in the Boston area? I'd definitely go check him out again. Later, Kevin

which exact batches ofRvG's did have copy control?
Kevin Bresnahan replied to JohnBlutarski's topic in Re-issues
What's "risky"? Annoying, maybe, but no risk at all. The discs themselves play perfectly in any CD player - the copy protection is not audible. Cactus Shield's copy protection technique is so easily avoided that it's laughable. All you have to do is shut off "auto start" or hold down the shift key when inserting the CD into the PC. I have been able to copy and rip every "copy protected" CD I ever bought, including the infamous Sony CDs with the rootkit. Kevin -
Jeffery's Thanksgiving CD Sale
Kevin Bresnahan replied to jeffcrom's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Bob Brookmeyer - Traditionalism Revisited (Pacific Jazz) - small sawcut in spine $7 Miles Davis - On the Corner (Japanese Sony Mastersound edition) $10 Sonny Rollins - Way Out West (MFSL) - a crack in the front of the jewel case $10 These 3 arrived today - thanks for the quick shipping. Right now I am listening to (for the 1st time in my life) Miles's "On The Corner". Frenetic funk - with Miles so distorted at points that his trumpet sounds like a cat caught in a ceiling fan. Brookmeyer's CD was always on my "to buy" list, but every time I picked it up, I just couldn;t buy a CD with Darren Stevens on the cover. "Sam!!" Kevin -

Man, I used to watch that show all the time! I always wondered why it disappeared. It seemed to me that I wasn't the only one watching it. A lot of us 20-somethings were watching it and talking about it at work... especially the babes who worked in the background. Look at that hair! RIP Ken.

There's no way a new piece of junk from China would be better than an old Nakamichi or other high-end manufacturer. Almost all of today's cassette decks are junk. They don't make them "hi-fi" any more. I would be way more worried about a new machine creasing tapes than an older high-end model. I wish I could find a circa 1980 Nak tape deck for $15. I'm sure it would put my cheapie Sony dual deck to shame.

Listening to Digital Media Vs. LPs
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Stop using the "typical" setting! I rip all of my mp3s with Exact Audio Copy & LAME set-up for VBR Q2 (called VBR-2 or Quality 2 in some programs). The resulting files are indistinguishable for the source CD. Yes, the files are bigger because of this, but not nearly as big as FLAC. All current mp3/iPod players can play VBR mp3 files. Kevin -
You should pick up "The New Miles Davis Quintet", the first recording this group released. BTW, if you can find them for a reasonable price, the DCC gold CD versions of these dates sound phenomenal. You should be able to pick up "The New Miles Davis Quintet" on a DCC gold CD for less than $25 these days. Somebody on the Hoffman forums has a copy for $22 right now. Later, Kevin

I was in a local Victory dealer for my end-of-year oil change and I got to talking with them about the new 2010 Victory Cross Country, Victory's answer to the Harley Street Glide. I came very close to buying a Street Glide when I bought my Kingpin last year, mainly because I wanted a radio and hard bags. Well, I talked with the owner for quite a while and it turned out I had ridden with him on a couple of group rides this summer. Small world. Then he said, "Let's sit down and see what kind of numbers we can work out". Well, I am pretty positive I'm going to be riding a Cross Country next summer. The deal is too good to pass up. Also, I really want to support this American motorcycle company and try to keep them afloat. I hope my purchase helps. I'm a little worried because I just love riding my 2008 Kingpin. But at least I'll have hard bags and a radio again. Kevin This is a black Cross Country - mine will be in "Solid Midnight Cherry"

Feeling this out - Solo project from me (NOT jazz!)
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jim - As I noted on your Facebook page, it's a bit like the Tor Lundval LPs I've been spinning lately, so I ordered a copy. The PayPal page adds shipping. No biggie for me (leave it on there for my order) but I thought you'd like to know. Looking forward to hearing it. Kevin -
Guess this is another joke, since Louis Hayes is the drummer on that record. Well I'll be a... great catch. Why all these years I've thought it was Arthur is beyond me. But Louis must've been borrowing Art's kit, because the squeak is the same as on "Candy". The thing about the squeak is that until you hear it, it's not there. Once you hear it, you can't stop hearing it! Later, Kevin

LF Eric Alexander and Nathan Davis
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mrjazzman's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Those two Eric Alexander dates are hard to find and if Eric has his way, they'll stay that way. I asked him about these two dates at a show and according to him, he was never paid for making them and has never received a dime in royalties from the label. Given that, I wonder why he just doesn't reissue them himself? It's not like Pony Canyon would have a leg to stand on in court. Later, Kevin -
Jim - you lucky dog! Congrats. I had two girls and the doctors told me & my wife that we couldn't have any more. I love having daughters. I do miss the guy things like playing catch in the backyard (and I know girls can do that too, but not my two) but my girls are the greatest. No complaints from me. Kevin

Built-In Compressor/Limiter for Home Stereos
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Audio Talk
I don't believe the original poster was talking about surround sound and I certainly was not. There are stereo situations where too much dynamic range is a problem. Most old Deutsche Grammophon CDs are pretty bad. But even though your post does not seem related to the topic, I'll bite: I have heard surround done well and surround done poorly. In most cases, the situations where I've heard it done poorly were the result of improper level settings in the listening area. And BTW, I disagree with you that surround sound is "crap". I happen to think it can provide a phenomenal listening experience, particularly for movies and even some music. Until you've heard Aerosmith's "Toys In The Attic" in 5.1, you don't know what you're missing (please do me a favor and ignore the fact that you hate Aerosmith, Allen ). Kevin -
Built-In Compressor/Limiter for Home Stereos
Kevin Bresnahan replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Audio Talk
DBX made a CD player that had variable dynamic range. If it wasn't such a piece of junk from a quality point of view, I probably would've bought one. I have a few classical CDs that are barely listenable without an active remote finger. Way too much dynamic range. From "what the hell was that noise" to "turn it DOWN TURN IT DOWN" sometimes in a matter of seconds. -
Funny you should bring Leroy up. He's playing at the Marblehead Jazz Festival this Saturday evening (10/10) and I'm thinking about going. It's been a while since I've seen Leroy but the last time I did, I thought he was channeling Armstrong pretty strongly. If he's still singing, he emulated Louis's rasp pretty good too. Kevin

Well, on the plus side, Sony can't screw up the sound any worse that Experience Hendrix already has. Their current CDs of "Are You Experienced" and "Electric Ladyland" are so maximized, they are fatiguing with headphones. Listening to them with headphones is like letting someone take a drill to your eardrum.

This morning I was driving in Boston-area rush hour traffic. Going between 45 mph and 0 mph - in other words stop & go traffic. At one point, I look over at the car next to me and the guy has a Dell laptop computer opened on his center console and he's surfing the web! What a moron! He was definitely looking at the screen because he had it angled toward the passenger door (in my direction). Suddenly, the car in front of him stopped and I was saying to myself, "Don't look up, don't look up". Damn. He looked up at the last second and locked up his brakes to avoid rear-ending it. I was so hoping for it. Surfing the web while driving? What is this world coming to?

Freddie Roach- All thats good
Kevin Bresnahan replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I just picked up a Horace Silver "Song For My Father" that's like this. Unfortunately, the LP was well played so there's some rice crispies on the lead-in, but otherwise it sounds decent. -
What is this? I can't find anything about it in any discography. Boot? Later, Kevin

I looked into helping get a stone for Larry Young's gravesite and I was told that Young and by extension, his family, did not want one. In Young's case, it might have something to do with his Muslim faith.
