At 78 (79 in October), it's not hard to believe that he's going to slow down a bit. At least he hasn't gone the route of other aging stars like Benny Golson or Lou Donaldson, whose last 10 years or so of tours were pretty much the same show over & over. Even Johnny Griffin did it to a certain extent.

I have to wonder if you'd get more replies if you told us what you're willing to pay.

I finally picked up a copy of Tyner/Henderson Live at Slugs.

Dannie Richmond - The Last Mingus Band A.D. (Landmark/Gatemouth). Great stuff from Jack Walrath, Ricky Ford, Bob Neloms & Cameron Brown.

Chet Baker - Five From '65: The Quintet Summer Sessions

$200? $40 per LP for records that I've seen in the used bins for under $10 before prices went nuts about 5 years ago? When it gets down to $100, I'm in. I only have a couple of these and they're pretty good, but not $40 good. -
I just finished watching "Sly Lives (aka The Burden Of Black Genius) and I left it feeling a bit bummed out to see his decline laid bare like this. It was a bit weird to hear George Clinton chuckle about him & Sly getting hooked on crack cocaine. Really George? You think that was funny? I never knew Sly was a DJ and a record producer before he formed The Family Stone. I guess that's likely because by the time I was getting into his music, all that was in the news by then was all of his drug arrests. To see what he did in a relatively short period of time was quite eye-opening. I did get a chuckle the first time that Mark Anthony Neal's face showed up on the screen. They say everyone has a doppleganger. Neal's would definitely be retired NBA player Paul Pierce.

Not a bad cover as covers go...

I think Blue Note's business model is to make money and to do that in today's music market, vinyl is it. I don't and can't blame Blue Note for the CD market's slow death. I actually blame the loudness wars and the audiophile market more than anything. Far too many never accepted that a CD can sound better than an LP, no matter what people do to show them this. Once the overly-loud CDs started appearing, it was the foothold these people needed to say, "See! CDs sound like shit," never mind that it was the result of shitty mastering and not the digital medium. The latest kerfuffle over Mobile Fidelity using hi res DSD files as their masters for LPs showed that this mistaken disdain for all things digital is never going to go away. Even though these LP releases were pretty much universally lauded by everyone who heard them, the dyed-in-the-wool audiophiles are still howling over being fooled and are now claiming that they sound terrible. The emperor has no clothes.

Kenny Burrell - On View At The Five Spot - The Complete Masters. Disc 2 is taking forever to rip. It's like there's something weird going on with the disc. It's been on track 6 for about 5 minutes.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Kevin Bresnahan replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Serge Chaloff - Blue Serge (Capitol). Spinning the new Tone Poet LP. I love this album so I just had to get this new cut to see how it came out. So far, I'm digging it a lot. Great bass on this but that's to be expected with a Kevin Gray Tone Poet LP. He definitely pushes the limits for bass response for these LP cuts. -
I practically wore out my LPs of "Endless Summer" when I was younger. We played it all the time when it was hot out. Summer music for summertime. I only saw The Beach Boys once and it was a long time ago. I don't remember it being very good. I wish I got to see them in their prime.

I got an order in from Euclid Records. First time I've bought from them in a long time. Junko Onishi - Baroque (Verve) Benny Carter - BBB & Co (OJC) Cornell Dupree - Bop 'N Blues (Kokopelli) Dannie Richmond - The Last Mingus Band A.D. (Landmark)

Miles Davis - Miles '55: The Prestige Recordings
Kevin Bresnahan replied to mjzee's topic in Re-issues
I have it all already and my ears would not hear any benefit to a new remaster so I won't be picking this one up. -
Jimmy Hamilton - Can't Help Swingin' (Prestige). A two-fer comp of "It's About Time" & "Can't Help Swinging". It certainly swings. Weird trumpet solo on one tune, "Two For One", with trumpeter Clark Terry using something I'd never heard of - a "buzz mute like Frankie Newton used to use". Not sure if I'm a fan... I thought I blew my tweeters.

I think those were sans box/booklet though, right? There's a no box/booklet set on discogs for $30 right now. I actually appreciated the booklet for this set so I'm glad I got the whole package.

Get it before someone else: Dusty Groove - Bob Belden "Turandot" I've never seen this CD in any used bin in my life. I was able to procure a copy from one of the musicians on the session. I've never seen it on line before either.

It's one of my favorite Mosaic sets and I say this as someone who is not a huge fan of big band style jazz. These jams are such fun. I just cannot figure out why the market for this set crashed like it did. It was a very low number print run and it sold out pretty quickly. The CD set was selling for as much as $350 at one point but it crashed and never recovered. Even the LP version is going for a little over $100 these days. That's crazy.

Lucky Thompson - Soul's Nite Out (Ensayo). I also have the Nessa LP version. Nice date. Did you get the SHM-CD with the extra track? That's the version I have.
