  1. Too bad that Pee Wee Russell didn't have some rehearsal time with Monk's band.
  2. A couple of quartet tracks, but mostly a trio record and a good one.
  3. The photo was taken by Ernest Withers, a Memphis photographer. I'm not sure what it's about. I have a book of his photographs, so I'll check tomorrow and see if there's some information in it.
  4. Sonny Boy Williamson shows why he was Little Walter's only rival - though their playing went in different directions.
  5. "Son's Blues" from Vanguard's Great Bluesmen - Newport - haunting.
  6. The first Trane I bought.
  7. I only have the Riverside (OJC) Levitt. I like it enough that I'd like to hear the RCAs.
  8. If you don't listen for a while, old and familiar can become new and unfamiliar. Nothing wrong with that.
  9. I like the music of Bobby Bradford, John Carter, Richard Davis, and Andrew Cyrille very much, but Don Preston's extraneous and unnecessary piano and synthesizer pretty much ruin this record for me.
  10. I don't want to get into any sort of anti-Ira Gitler mode on this thread. Obviously, ne meant a lot to many people here and I don't want to step on their feelings of loss. I will make a comment on one statement you make: "One reason apparently was that Ira GItler had the monstrosity of not openly and immediately embracing the "new thing". There's a big difference between not embracing a certain type of music and writing angry diatribes against it.
  11. Don't have that one, but I always enjoy listening to Curtis Fuller.
  12. Spoke to my soul from the first time I heard it. I'm sure it was the same for many others, including yourself.
