  1. I'm not a Ben Sidran fan, but it might almost be worth getting this to hear what Roscoe Mitchell does. Well, I did say "almost".
  2. That Pepper Select is a great box.
  3. Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers: In the Beginning (Specialty/Ace) Check out Sam Cooke's breathing technique on "Jesus, I'll Never Forget". Amazing.
  4. The Young Big Bill Broonzy 1928-1936 (Yazoo)
  5. Horace Parlan Trio: Hi-Fly
  6. They look very serious and severe in the photos I've seen. Is their music like that? Or perhaps I've just seen the wrong photos.
  7. Big Bill Broonzy: Do That Guitar Rag (Yazoo)
  8. One of the first records that introduced me to the music.
  9. George Russell: Stratusphunk (Riverside)
  10. ! Still have fond memories of hearing them live - great night. I believe that it was Jerry Lawson's last concert with the group - though I didn't know that at the time.
  11. Lee Dorsy: Ya Ya (Fury/Relic)

  13. As I've listened to that one over the years, I've come to like it more and more.
  14. Minus one now: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/12/arts/music/joni-sledge-singer-in-the-we-are-family-group-sister-sledge-dies-at-60.html?_r=0 I assume that's why you listened to and posted this.
  15. Or sometimes it's a good thing to leave the past behind - not forget it, but just leave it behind - and begin something new.
  16. OK. I'll help move things along: Monk's Dream
  17. Does anyone else here share my appreciation for Kirk Felton's remastering work on Fantasy/OJC/etc. reissues? I'm not one to obsess over various remasterings, but I find that he did some excellent work. Does anyone know what he's doing these days?
  18. Lee Konitz & Red Mitchell: I Concentrate on You (Steeplechase)
  19. Sheb Wooley Sam the Sham John Lamb
  20. Mingus: Let My Children Hear Music (Columbia)
  21. I have to admit that I'm not big on boxes these days - I just don't listen to them much, which is completely my fault - but I'll second the recs of Bird on Savoy and Dial, and Billie on Columbia. A few other favorites: Louis - Hot 5's and 7's (either Columbia or JSP); Bud - Complete Verve; Django - the JSP sets mastered by Ted Kendall. If I'm allowed to stretch it to non-jazz sets: the Muddy, Wolf, and Walter sets on Chess/Hip-O Select; Elmore James - Flair/Virgin/Ace (Flair/Modern/Meteor/etc. sides) and Capricorn (Bobby Robinson sides); Budapest String Quartet - Beethoven String Quartets - United Archives.
