  2. Thanks. How does one do this these days? I used to be able to post Youtube images, but not lately.

  4. He was a long time favorite of mine. I met him at a show he did with just a second guitarist in the late 90's. I had a chance to speak with him briefly after the show and he was very cordial and even signed a few albums. He was known for making witty/sarcastic remarks between songs. I still recall seeing him on the Tonight show in the early 1970's. Debbie Reynolds had performed earlier, and when the Hot Licks came on, he opened with a sarcastic, "Gee, that was swell, Debbie." He cracked the musicians in the Tonight Show band up with a couple of his comments during the set, but Johnny Carson looked pissed off when they finished - I guess that Debbie Reynolds was a favorite of his. I doubt that Hicks and the Hot Licks ever appeared on the show again. Thanks for everything, Mr. Hicks. You were great and you'll be missed.

  10. I hear what Larry's saying and agree with some of it. That said, I do like much of Bud Plays Bird. His playing isn't perfect - there are some flubs and a few lapses in his timing - but I'll go back to listen to his playing on the first (October '57) session again. "Confirmation", "Ko Ko", and "Buzzy" stand out for me. When I listen to Bud, I feel that I have a sense of how he was feeling when he recorded, more than I do with almost any other pianist. I always have the sense that he was laying his feelings out there for us to hear and didn't hold back. On the October session, he sounds in a relaxed good mood and, for me anyway, that comes through in his playing, even on the uptempo tunes. So even though Bud Plays Bird is far from being my favorite Bud, even my favorite late Bud, there's enough there that I want to hear now and will want to hear in the future.

  14. I heard him accompany The Copasetics over 30 years ago. The Copasetics were great - I remember Honi Coles, Chuck Green, and, iirc, "Cookie" Cook were among the dancers. Derek Smith was in an accompanying role, but he did play a solo or two, probably to give the dancers, who were not young men, a break. I assume that since The Copasetics were based in New York, that he was also based in New York at that time.

  16. Knew his name from his playing with Willie Nelson. Until I read his obituary, I had no idea of his connection with Doug Sahm.
  17. I think you're correct. There's a J.R. Monterose LP, Welcome Back, J.R.! (Progressive KUX 136G) which is credited on the back cover as a "cooperative project with Teichiku Records, Japan & Gus Statiras, Progressive Records, N.Y. USA". I don't believe that this was ever issued in the U.S.
