  1. I just didn't read thoroughly before I posted and I guess I saw what I wanted to see. But I'll go with being a Yankee rebel.
  2. I didn't buy a lot of music this year, but here are some new and old releases I enjoyed: Jack Dejohnette: Made in Chicago (ECM) Roscoe Mitchell: Celebrating Fred Anderson (Nessa) Michael Hurley: Fatboy Spring (Mississippi) Wooden Joe Nicholas (American Music) Barnes-Bocage Big Five (American Music) Janacek: String Quartets 1 & 2 - Skampa Quartet (Supraphon) Robert Schumann: String Quartets Op. 41 - Ysaye Quartet (Ysaye) Borodin: Symphonies 1-3 - Tjeknavorian/National Phil. Orch (RCA) edit - Oops, I didn't notice this was supposed to be strictly jazz acquisitions. Ah well ....
  3. Zal Yanofsky was a great guitarist. He played all kinds of stuff within the context of the Spoonful. I saw a short interview with John Sebastian on a PBS station where he said that Zal left the Spoonful because Sebastian was moving toward a more singer/songwriter direction and Zal wanted to play rock & roll. That might or might not be the story - or part of it. There was also a story about how they were doing a bus tour with The Supremes who were singing "Where Did Our Love Go?". Sebastian said that he and Zal talked about doing something similar and that's where "Daydream" came from.
  4. "706 Blues" (Redita)
  5. Reading The Cornish Trilogy has been a great experience.
  6. Etoile de Dakar: Absa Gueye (Pam)
  7. Robertson Davies: What's Bred in the Bone I'm actually in the homestretch of The Cornish Trilogy now, finishing The Lyre of Orpheus.
  8. Just put a check in the mail.
  9. T Bone Walker: Singing the Blues (Imperial/Pathe Marconi)
  10. A different cover from the one on my LP: I like Jeff's cover better, though I think that that the LP cover better conveys the idea of a lonesome road.
  11. My copy of Blues and Things on Swaggie has a different cover - a fairly generic photo of Earl Hines. What label is yours on?
  12. Looks like something that would make for a good read this time of year. How was it?
  13. Dick Stuart ("Dr. Strangeglove") Marv Throneberry Dave Kingman
  14. Just listened to Favorite Country Blues Guitar-Piano Duets 1929-1937 (LP) the other day. When I was reading Henry Townsend's autobiography, I listened to St Louis Blues 1929-1935 - The Depression (LP) and Twenty First Street Stomp - The Piano Blues of St Louis (CD). And I recall listening to Bo Carter: Banana in Your Fruit Basket (CD) recently - beautiful guitar. Whenever I listen to one of my Yazoos, I always pick up on something in the music that I hadn't noticed before.
