  4. I know you meant Earl May. Just wanted to let people know who might be looking for Early May. Perhaps with the World Series and baseball in the air, you had Early Wynn in the back of your mind.

  7. I have to shake my head when I read comments from Dyer (and others) saying that John Coltrane had reached a dead end in his music. Some even are even foolish enough to speculate where Trane's music might have evolved. Music, like any art, is an ongoing process, and that results of that process might be a mystery even to the creators. I wonder whether John Coltrane had any idea where his music would be in ten years when he was playing with Miles in 1956. In early 1967, he may have had no idea where his music might go. John Coltrane kept searching until the end of his life and his music is there for us to hear. All we can do is listen and take whatever we can from what he offered us. For Dyer (or anyone, for that matter) to say that Coltrane had reached a dead end in his music is presumptuous at best, and ignorant at worst.
  8. +1 in spades. As often happens, I agree with Moms's general drift, with some reservations about her (?) particular wording ( on "turd", though ). Years ago, I bought Dyer's But Beautiful on the basis of some enthusiastic Internet reviews. I coudn't stand it (a "catastrophic" purchase subsequently donated to the local library), which may go to say that Dyer is capable of offending when writing about straight-ahead as well as avant-garde jazz! My copy of But Beautiful ended up at the local library too. That was probably too kind a choice. It should have ended up in the recycle container.

  17. Hadn't seen that quote before. Sounds absurd to me also. I've only heard Ron Carter on recordings, so perhaps my opinion isn't a fair one, but he never struck me as having a big sound. I'm not exactly sure what he means by "more authority", but I'll take Jimmy Garrison over Carter if I had to choose.
