  2. Have that same issue. It was the first Trane I bought, and I remember being somewhat surprised and disappointed that the playing wasn't further out. I had heard Ornette at that point and expected some of the same from John Coltrane. After a bit, I heard more Coltrane and came to appreciate Crescent. And "further out" Trane wasn't far away.

  4. My wife and I walked the Cliff Walk in Newport last week and saw some of the same view that's seen in Steve Gray's photo. For some reason, I never gave a thought to the Newport Festivals or to the Cliff Walk Manor counter festival when we were there.

  6. Mosaic didn't issue Destry Rides Again after Randy Weston asked that it not be reissued. Sad and disgusting that an outfit like FreshSounds would issue it against his wishes. (I'm assuming here that he didn't change his mind in the interim.)
  7. Been away, but I hope you had a fantastic birthday, Guy.
  8. That is a fantastic record... I have it only as a download from eMusic, but sooner or later I need to find the CD or vinyl. FYI - Cadence has restocked much of the Black Saint & Soul Note catalog, including most or all of the Muhal titles. And Black Saint may release a Muhal box at some point.

  12. I have no problem with Yankee haters. There are plenty of boorish Yankee fans who love to lord it over other team's fans (tho none on the Big O that I can think of). If they get some flack in return, that's how it should be.
  13. Hear what you're saying, & I wish that the Yanks would bring up more farm bred players instead of just spending money. But - look at the top 6 money spending teams on your list. Were the Red Sox, Cubs, Mets and Tigers the top # 2, 3. 5, & 6 teams in basball? Anywhere near? Anywhere near the playoffs even? #2, Boston had injuries and came the closest, but the rest weren't in it at all. Anyway, it's all just entertainment - except for the guys who get off on calling sports call in shows. Even though I follow the games, I know in the end it makes no real difference to my life who wins. And I said the same thing last year when the yanks won it all. Congratulations to the Rangers' fans. You guys suffered long enough.
  14. For me, the big difference between Miles and Jamal is what comes between the "dramatic pauses".
  15. More Reginald Hill: Child's Play
  16. Yes. In the early 60's, Columbia released boxes of Billie, Duke, Fletcher Henderson, New Orleans Jazz, Chicago Jazz, New York Jazz, & possibly others I can't think of right now.
  17. Have to say that the previous clip did nothing for me, except make me feel like I wasted eight minutes of my life. Perhaps not a total waste, since I know I'll never listen to Ahmad Jamal again. There seem to be many here who love his playing. They're not me and I'm not them - that's part of what makes all the different worlds of music we have.
  18. I used to have a copy of the Fresh Sound reissue. The sound bothered me and I ended up trading it. Not sure if I heard what Allen heard, but the sound spoiled the music for me.
  19. Best wishes on your birthday, Matthew!

  24. Trip never was the classiest label. That record is a new one to me.
