  1. I don't think we'll ever hear the rejected session this decade. . . .
  2. A celebratory wish to all the Sangreys!
  3. I agree, those Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto cds are amazing and essential. And sound magnificent as well.
  4. I might even recommend the second Morelenbaum2 over the first! And I'll echo Jim's recommendation of the Gilberto cd, and his anguish that it is not in print! The Spanish version of this WAS released as two separate cds as far as I can tell. . . . How about an RVG? Jim has been the most helpful person on the planet for all things bossa novan for me. . . . I'd like to thank him publicly, and say you should heed his words about the bossa!
  5. That would be my recommendation too. . . though they're mighty tasty "blackened" but I've never personally prepared them that way. . . .
  6. Just got back from a viewing of "Van Helsing." Reminded me of the sort of matinee movies I saw as a young 'un, but with of course an MTV seasoning. . . . (No MTV when I was a youngstah!) You won't need to use your brain much, but nice visuals, including the stars Hugh Jackman (a gal I went with was all aflutter) and Kate Beckinsale (beauteous indeed!)
  7. I agree, Addey's work is very neutral and musical. Hard in some instances however to tell if it is his "mastering" or the "tape transfers" of others (both most likely) that should get big credit. Conn, there are many Mosaic sets that are wonderful to have, that have sound that rivals the Japanese . . . . The new Mulligan set for example sounds so much better than any other release of the music, original or reissue, I've ever heard! (Ellen Fitton tape transfers, Malcolm Addey mastering engineer). Great music as well, wonderful jazz!

    "Connee"

Chuck, thanks very much. It was Baker, Snyder and Marshall I was really enjoying and wondering who!

    "Connee"

I'm listening to "Connee" by Connee Boswell on DECCA with the Sy Oliver Orchestra. . . . Anyone have any personnel information for this lp? The band is great!
  10. I'm with Z. Your speakers will determine which amp to get. . . if your speakers are reasonably efficient, and you don't have a large room to fill, I'd recommend looking at the tube amps taht Decware builds. . . amazing bang for the buck: Decware page
  11. Daaaa aaammmmmhhh! Looks just like him!
  12. Okay, I don't think they are actually performing together on this one. . . . Wouldn't that be something though?
  13. I recommend the "Manic Mode". . . .

  15. All those Glenn Miller last time. . .sort of makes me less surprised to see all these Bob James this time!
  16. See, that's just it: I honestly have never felt other than the sum is less than the two separately. Ron Tutt on the solo sides. . . is a stiffer more structured drummer, and I enjoy his work as well. I can do without Hart. . . . Just a personal thing.
  17. MM, the music is very good, in my opinion. I'm one of the few people here that likes the "How Insensitive" lp included, and "The Phantom" is a highlight, and so is "It Could Only Happen with You." Duke here explores Brazilian bossa nova with Airto Moreira and Flora Purim on board and I think his explorations have found fertile musical lands. There is also "Merry Ole Soul" included, which is my favorite Xmas session, period. I must say however that if one already had Japanese remasterings of those titles in this set released in Japan, there would be no need to purchase this Select. The remastering is the downside. . . just plain ole McMaster, not his best work.
  18. I'm glad you got to meet her! She has always impressed me as a wonderful woman from what I have read about her. And I'm not surprised she remains a beauty! Miles . . . Miles . . . Miles. . . . He woulda/coulda/shoulda.
  19. If you were shaking your head. . . well I wouldn't bother; the extra stuff pretty much is in line with the released stuff, so you'd be doing some real head-shaking. Me. . . I'm not a Mickey Hart fan. I'm much more a Bill Kreutzman fan.
  20. I've never heard the Godchaux lp and never even knew it existed until the box set mentioned it. . . . I just like the gospel element that they and Jerry shared on these solo sessions, it was a joyous musical meeting, and I like their contributions to "Wake of the Flood" and beyond. . . . My Grateful Dead collection desire generally stops with "Terrapin Station" though studio lp wise. . . I'll grab some live stuff after that, but that was where I took a turn away from the Dead and other rock and deeeeply irretrievably into acoustic jazz for a looooong time.
  21. I just have one of the Garcia and Grisman discs, one of the last officially released one, that stuff in general is not really my cup of tea. I'm no Kingfish and Purple Riders fan by any means. I like Weir. . . with the Dead (Ace is great, it's a Dead album really). . . I like Weir a LOT with the Dead, little outside the Dead. My African experience was principally Eastern and Southern, and Western Africa is a puzzle to me. . . . Probably good food, but I don't think I'll be in your neck of the woods any time soon!
  22. Yes. Though "love" is strong. I love Monk, Ellington, Mingus and a few others. I really enjoy Tanita's work some of the time.
  23. Well, I disagree of course. (I LIKE Keith and Donna Godchaux. . . any one have a copy of THEIR lp?) I have learned to LIKE these covers by Garcia over time. . . I find his fusion of influences to be an interesting thing and I listen past the production problems (which really aren't as bad as so many other lps of the time). And truth be told, I was never quite mainstream enough to be a hippy. . . I was just an alienated wierdo from my happy African experience being slamdunked into a rural Ohio late adolescence.
  24. Okay, I finally got this two cd set (Postcards. ..) and I must say. . . half of the disc is great, the other half, and the bonus disc, well. . . not my cup of tea! Hard to say even why half is great and half isn't because they are all pretty similar, but there's just something to half of it that is slick and grating. I really have not warmed up to the Dead material with two drummers after Mickey's return. . . . I much prefer just Billy Kreutzman. . . that has a lot to do with what I don't like about half of this I think. If you think you have to have this and can only find the single disc version, you're really not missing much at all by not having the two tunes on the bonus disc, which are in my opinion the worst of the lot.
