  1. I just ordered the Solo Art. Thanks for the mention, that one blew past me, though I do remember seeing one of the lps.
  2. They swing like mad! They're an excellent example of the sort of concentrated swing and masterful playing three incredible artists who've worked together can pull off and make look so easy. I've started to torture myself by plugging in my Strat while these are playing and just pick out some melody lines. Well, at least I can get a good SOUND (the '59 Fender Bassman Reissue LTD amp lets me dial in a nice jazz sound). This is intensely well-conceived and executed stuff.
  3. I wouldn't buy the Avid, I haven't been too impressed with the sound quality of the Avids I've had/heard. I got the Verve set in the mail from Tower today. Excellent sound!
  4. Oh, I didn't know that. Okay, less disapointing then! I actually like Time Fades Away quite a bit, but it's possibly because I saw him on that tour and was excited to have the lp come out and listened to it a lot at the time. He was really "on" when I saw him.
  5. Yeah, I would be disappointed with just the cd version too. Actually, there were three previously released discs in the set.
  6. Ted, Thanks for sharing that. I love the piano playing of both Hines and Wellstood.
  7. Great set! Right now, the "Turn Out the Stars" box set.
  8. Okay, I bought the Blu-Ray. I love the sonic possibilities of Blu-Ray and this set does NOT disappoint. I'm taking my time with it and have gone thoroughly through the first two disc several times. The sound is amazing, better than cd or dvd. The way it is set up is entertaining: each disc has as a main menu a file cabinet drawer. There are hanging folders to choose from that have folders within them. Select a hanging folder and then you can open up other folders for the music, for photos, for lyrics, for memorabilia, for press clippings, for videos. There's quite a bit here, not hidden. This is the period that most interests me. Depending on the year range of the next one if it ever comes out I'd be interested in about half of that and after that my interest in Neil sharply wanes. . . . I pretty much fall off after On the Beach and though I do like quite a bit of the later stuff I don't have to have in depth pieces of the puzzle. So I think it's a miracle it's been released since there is so little support from fans, but it's a nice project and delivery. Ridiculously expensive for Blu-Ray, I agree, but I have the money and wanted to see what it would sound and look like, and I'm especially pleased with the sound. My Blu-Ray player has very good sound playback, and the audio on this archive really delivers fidelity wise. And when you're listening you can watch a 45 spin on an old changer or the tape spin on an old tape deck. . . it's pretty interesting and in my opinion well-presented.
  9. And many many happy returns!
  10. Yes, I got an email from Michael Cuscuna yesterday. . . I had suggested the Phineas Newborn Roulette material as a project. Here's his reply: Lon, Thanks. Both Roulette albums are good and they did fit on one CD which came out in Japan. There are a couple tunes from an aborted session but I haven't heard them. Maybe if we start up singles again, we'll do as the Japanese did. MC So the Singles program is not moving forward at this time.
  11. Which Basie Decca Mosaic is that? Or do you mean the Basie Verve Mosaic? Yes. Thanks. Slip of the fingers.
  12. I have all three volumes of this, have had them for years now, and I agree, this is a wonderful set. Fantastic music executed with passion and drive. This is JAZZ.
  13. Here's how I rank the four sets as far as "reaching to listen". . . in order of times I'd reach: Pres Mosaic Baslie Live Roulette Mosaic Pres Verve Basie Decca Mosaic The early years of Pres are just amazing, music that always moves me.
  14. Ah, I bet it's because the sex is great.
  15. I love the Weston. The Jones is also great. The good news is that these have been distributed to other stores than Mosaic, so they may well be out there a while.
  16. What are you doing to make her cry? Or, is it just because she knows the secret to the streets? "smiles and cries" She says she cries because no one has ever loved her the way I do. It's a happiness sort of crying as far as I can tell, at least for the most part. . . .
  17. If you sold the Basie set you'd finance a few other sets. It's in relatively high demand. Also, there's a chance you'd enjoy the Pres of the Mosaic set more than the Pres of the Verve set. (I guess that's possible, I love all Pres.)
  18. That's good news Sal. I just finished smiling with my girlfriend. We're both so emotional, which is a big change for me. She'll be smiling, then she'll cry, then she's smiling again. It's incredibly special and I don't want it to end. I don't think it will.
  19. Nice analysis Jim. I do find the Miles version of the music very African, and I think I responded strongly to that when it was released and I was fresh back from an adolescence in Africa. I really love this music. I find very little of the music "like it" to be "like it" in ways that are important to me. For example, I see exactly what RT means, but the very things he applauds in the Yo Miles! material is the very stuff that makes me lose interest. Ah well. Even more than the released material, the concerts on bootlegs, even ones in crappy sound, draw me in and have been a pleasure for me for years. And, I'm sure, will be.
  20. I don't organize them well. And I do lose discs. . . for a while at least. But I really enjoy this way of keeping them. Going through them I find things to listen to. I've gpne through the entire collection disc by disc this month. That was an experience!
  21. Thanks guys. She really is getting better week by week. So glad that the earlier diagnosis of Alzheimer's plus memory loss was incorrect! Right now, Bill Coleman recorded live in Paris is making me smile.
  22. See aren't you happy that you're not MICHAEL Scott? Many happy happy returns.
