  2. Thanks trane. I'll try to be there to check that out. Say "hey" from me. I did, Chuck. He extends his greetings to you and said you're an integral part of the history in the book. He even asked what board you post on and I mentioned the Big-O, of course.
  3. Really? I was sitting up front in the first chair on the left with the green jacket. Yeah, it was a very educational event overall. Great turnout! George's kid couldn't leave him alone. His wife, Miya Masaoka was there also. Haha! Roscoe being present was a pleasant surprise. Wish I had brought my Art Ensemble box with me for him to sign. Apparently, there were other AACM members in the house too. Well trane, I would have introduced myself if I had known what you look like--I was sitting on the right in black sweater with glasses and dark hair. What a genius George is (I guess he did get the MacArthur after all)! I haven't heard someone that eloquent speak in a long time. He read portions of his book on the Great Migration, the AACM in Paris, gender roles in the AACM, and race, among other themes, such as his methodology, that he touched on in a question and answer format. While he signed my book, I had a pleasant albeit brief discussion with him on ethnography/cultural studies and his friendship with another author I admire a lot--Robin Kelley (who will be coming out with a Thelonious Monk bio soon). I dream of studying with one of them some day. Roscoe Mitchell was in the room, too, and I got him to sign it also! All in all, a very stimulating evening at City Lights. -Jay
  4. The City Lights event is tonight. I'm planning on going. First time I've gone out for leisure in a while.
  5. Ain't that the truth. Yep, my mom just got discharged from the hospital. Further x-rays reveal no internal damage and the docs suspect it is just muscle trauma that will take several weeks to get over, so she can go home and rest. We're glad to have her back here. I'm gonna have time to start reading what everybody posted now. Thanks again guys!
  6. Thanks for all of your kind thoughts, guys. Haven't had the time to read all them yet and have just browsed through 'em. Glad to hear that another board member has averted disaster too. Guess a lotta of us are going through tough times too. Things were not exactly cheerful for me before this, but it has given me a newfound appreciation for how fragile life can be. Thanks again, everybody. I really appreciate it.
  7. Thanks guys. Yes, the airbags and seat belts were absolute life savers. A split-second more and he would have slammed into the right door. Don't even want to think about that.
  8. This past Sunday evening, after just happening to visit a friend in the hospital and heading home, a speeding taxi van ran a red light as I crossed an intersection and crashed head-on into the front of my car sending it full speed spinning and flying into a street pole. Luckily, everybody survived intact for the most part & I have some minor injuries on my right hand and knee along w/ soreness in a few parts while my mom's are a lot more serious. She is, at least, out of the trauma unit now and in observation. The other driver was knocked unconscious, but woke up later w/amnesia. Like I said, I am lucky to be alive & had been at SF General Hospital all night and went home w/ no sleep at all. I was not able to finally sleep until late last night after feeling tense and anxious all day replaying the scene over and over again in my head. When I saw the pole coming straight ahead w/ the steering wheel having no control over the car, I thought it was my time. Part of the Prius actually separated and it is a total loss, but I'm not really concerned w/ that right now. I'm just glad to be here.
