Updated w/ better article... http://www.austin360.com/blogs/content/sha..._1947_2008.html Buddy Miles 1947- 2008 By Michael Corcoran | Wednesday, February 27, 2008, 01:06 PM Drummer Buddy Miles, who recorded with Jimi Hendrix as Band of Gypsys in 1970 and had a career revival in 1986 as singer in the California Raisins claymation commercials, died Tuesday night in Austin of congestive heart failure. He was 60. Although he was born in Omaha, Neb., and lived for many years in Chicago, where he co-founded Electric Flag in 1967, Miles had moved to Austin after suffering a stroke in 2005. “He wanted to get back to music,” stepdaughter Chealsea Shahan said. “He moved to Austin for peace and harmony.” Backed by the New Orleans Social Club, Miles performed “Them Changes” at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Sept. 2006. He also played at La Zona Rosa in October with an all-star Austin blues band. “He was a real strong guy who overcame a lot,” said local blues guitarist Randy Pavlock, who said Miles “was like a father to me.” Pavlock was playing a club on Sixth Street two years ago when he looked up and saw Miles in the audience. “Band of Gypsys” was probably my favorite record when I was a kid,” said Pavlock, who said he felt “a friendship bond” that first night. Miles relished the role as a mentor. A child prodigy, whose father had a jazz band, Miles was playing with Wilson Pickett in the ’60s when guitarist Mike Bloomfield asked him to form Electric Flag, a band that would fuse soul, rock and blues. Originally known for his powerhouse drumming, Miles also became known as a soulful rock singer on a million-selling 1972 live album recorded with Carlos Santana. An enduring classic, “Them Changes” was performed Monday and Tuesday at Madison Square Garden by Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. The former Blind Faith frontmen are expected to play the song again tonight with a special dedication to their old friend. Miles is survived by spouse Sherrilae Chambers-Miles. A memorial concert will take place March 30 at Threadgill’s on Riverside Drive.

Thanks GA... Funny you should ask that. I went out with my family for a b-day dinner last night and played the remastered 'Trane "Ballads" CD included in the Impulse box I got from the BB deal in the car. Hadn't heard that album in years, so it was a nice treat. Even my mom enjoyed it. I am getting really old though (32). Can still remember my teenage years like it was yesterday. Still waiting for a proper reissue of "OM". -
Who's in on it? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/15/smbusiness...oney_topstories -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EBay seller boycott set to start Monday Ebay sellers plan a weeklong strike to protest changes to the site's fee, search and feedback policies. By Stacy Cowley February 18 2008: 10:19 AM EST (FORTUNE Small Business) -- Activists opposed to eBay's (EBAY, Fortune 500) upcoming fee and policy changes are readying for a weeklong site boycott starting on Monday, with buyers and sellers waiting to see if this strike will succeed where past protests have failed. The boycott, planned to run Feb. 18 - 25, is scheduled to overlap eBay's Feb. 20 rollout of significant changes announced last month. Sellers say eBay's new policies are likely to cost them more money, but what's really inspired an outpouring of wrath is an adjustment to eBay's feedback system: sellers will no longer be able to leave negative commentary about their buyers. Critics say that will leave sellers vulnerable to negligent bidders and scammers. "You get bad buyers as often as you get bad sellers," said M. Owens, a Severn, Md.-based seller of high-end dolls that typical go for several hundred dollars each. On such an expensive transaction, having a buyer cause trouble - by, for example, disputing the transaction and requesting a credit-card chargeback after they've already received their merchandise - can be financially devastating, she said. Owens, who plans to participate in the boycott and avoid buying or selling on eBay next week, is also worried about the impact of a change to eBay's "best match" search algorithm, one of the least-publicized aspects of the upcoming changes. That search method, which will become eBay's default next month, favors sellers with high and detailed customer-satisfaction ratings. Low-volume sellers, like Owens, say this puts them at a disadvantage by burying their listings. EBay spokesman Usher Lieberman said the company is taking a wait-and-see approach to the boycott talk "At this point it's still premature for us to speculate," Lieberman said. "We're empathetic with our sellers and understand that they're concerned, and that some of them object to some of the changes we're implementing. On the other hand, we think we have very good reasons for what we're doing." Rival sites court eBay sellers EBay has no plans for listing-fee discounts or other special promotions next week to combat a potential boycott-related drop in listings, Lieberman said. This week, eBay ran a one-day discounted listing fee special offer on Wednesday, a move that increased listings on the site that day from around 12 million to 16 million. That special offer was not prompted by the groundswell of seller discontent about the upcoming changes, according to Lieberman. "We shouldn't be reading anything into that," he said. "We're always testing the price elasticity of our market." Whether or not the planned boycott will be successful in affecting eBay's bottom line remains to be seen, but auction veterans say this degree of seller backlash to eBay fee hikes and other changes is unprecedented. "I've been getting about 400 e-mails an hour," said Valerie Lennert, an Anaheim, Calif., doll-clothing merchant who became an unofficial spokeswoman for the boycott after posting a call-to-arms video on Google (GOOG, Fortune 500)'s YouTube. Past eBay boycott attempts have fizzled, and this one may too, Lennert acknowledged. With millions of individuals selling on eBay, gaining critical mass for any organized action is extremely challenging. But simply getting eBay's attention is a worthy accomplishment, she said. "There are a lot of people who are really upset, and if we choose to go somewhere else as a group, there won't be an eBay anymore," she said. "We don't think eBay understands that. They think they're invincible, and they don't seem to listen to what we need. Even if listings don't go down, we're reached the main goal: to let them know how upset we are. I'm pretty sure they know that at this point."

I really hope this is not true. If it is, this whole thing is a sham. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080214/ap_on_..._clemens_pardon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- McNamee's lawyer predicts Clemens pardon By RONALD BLUM, AP Baseball Writer 23 minutes ago One of Brian McNamee's lawyers predicted Roger Clemens will be pardoned by President Bush, saying some Republicans treated his client harshly because of the pitcher's friendship with the Bush family. Lawyer Richard Emery made the claims Thursday, a day after a congressional hearing broke down along party lines. Many Democrats were skeptical of Clemens' denials he used performance-enhancing drugs and Republicans questioned the character of McNamee, the personal trainer who made the accusations against the seven-time Cy Young Award winner. "It would be the easiest thing in the world for George W. Bush, given the corrupt proclivities of his administration, to say Roger Clemens is an American hero, Roger Clemens helped children," Emery said in a telephone interview. "It's my belief they have some reason to believe they can get a pardon." During Wednesday's session before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Clemens repeated his denials under oath, which could lead to criminal charges if federal prosecutors conclude he made false statements or obstructed Congress. "I'm not aware of Mr. Clemens having been charged with anything," White House deputy press secretary Tony Fratto said after being told of Emery's remarks. Emery cited Bush's decision last year to commute the 2 1/2-year prison sentence of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, his vice president's former top aide. Libby was convicted in the case of the leaked identity of a CIA operative. During the hearing, Clemens cited his friendship with Bush's father, President George H.W. Bush, a baseball fan who regularly attends Houston Astros' games. Clemens said he was on a recent hunting trip when the elder Bush called with words of support. "When all this happened, the former president of the United States found me in a deer blind in south Texas and expressed his concerns that this was unbelievable, and stay strong and hold your head up high," Clemens testified. Emery said as he thought about the testimony overnight, Clemens' reference to the call from the elder Bush convinced him the questioning by Republicans was a concerted effort. "All the pieces fell into place given his friendship, his personal friendship with the Bush family," Emery said. "They have some belief that even if he's prosecuted, he will never have to serve jail time or face a trail. This is a charade we're going through." IRS Special Agent Jeff Novitzky attended the hearing and watched from the second row. Novitzky has been a part of the BALCO prosecution team that secured an indictment against Barry Bonds on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice. Bonds testified before a grand jury in 2003 and denied that he knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs. Emery praised Clemens' lawyers, Rusty Hardin and Lanny Breuer, as knowledgeable and said the prospect of a pardon was the only explanation that allowed the pitcher to repeat his denials under oath. "It's the only reason lawyers worth their salt would allow their client to run into the buzzsaw of Jeff Novitzky and the potential prosecution, tampering and lying to a federal official," Emery said. Joe Householder, Clemens' spokesman, said he would attempt to reach Hardin or Breuer for comment. Republicans on the committee did not immediately return telephone calls. Emery had harsh criticism for Republican Reps. Dan Burton of Indiana, Virginia Foxx of North Carolina, Darrell Issa of California and Christopher Shays of Connecticut. Shays called McNamee a "drug dealer" and Burton accused McNamee of telling "lie after lie after lie after lie." "It was disgusting and despicable behavior," Emery said. "It was clear to me they were carrying someone's water." Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Maryland Democrat who said he believed McNamee, was concerned about the apparent Republican-Democratic divide. "Of all the things to become partisan over, this was the wrong one," Cummings said. "What we needed to be doing was to be in search of truth. And I think that when you are truly in search of truth, we need to put the partisan shoes at the door and walk in without them." ___ AP White House Correspondent Terence Hunt and AP Sports Writer Joseph White contributed to this report. -
From http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AiAC...o&type=lgns The most vocal grandstander was Rep. Dan Burton of rural Indiana, who absolutely skewered McNamee. "This is really disgusting," Burton said. "I don't know what to believe. I know what I don't believe and that's you." Strong words from a guy who while cheating on his wife knocked up his girlfriend and went years without visiting his son (though he was kind enough to cut him some checks).

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/12/science/...amp;oref=slogin Hear the Music The Physics of Coltrane’s Technique: How Pros Hit the High Notes By KENNETH CHANG Published: February 12, 2008 The saxophone, invented by Adolphe Sax, the Belgian instrument maker, and patented in 1846, is a curved tube of brass with holes. Its vibrations can reach high-pitched wailing notes, particularly when played by jazz musicians like John Coltrane. The vocal tract, including the mouth and upper throat, is another vibrating tube, and for some years, scientists and musicians have wondered how important the one is to the other. But it is not so easy to jam a microphone or camera down a saxophonist’s throat. In addition, the mouth is also not the easiest place to make precise measurements. “It’s highly variable,” said Jer Ming Chen, a physics graduate student at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. “It’s wet. It’s moist. It’s also very loud in there. It’s incredibly loud in there. That’s been the main challenge that prevented direct measurements.” Writing in the current issue of the journal Science, Mr. Chen and two colleagues describe a measuring device they were able to build in the mouthpiece of a tenor saxophone to determine whether saxophonists use their vocal tracts in making music. Their answer: yes and no. The researchers’ device, embedded in the mouthpiece, does not interfere with the saxophonist’s ability to play. It injects a specially designed sound, a mix of 224 frequencies, into the saxophonist’s mouth. A microphone listens to the echoes bouncing off the mouth and vocal tract, detecting which frequencies are amplified by the shape of the vocal tract. Five professional saxophonists and three amateurs went to the laboratory to play a saxophone outfitted with the device. The researchers found that over standard lower-frequency notes in the saxophone repertory, the resonant frequency of the vocal tract varied between players and did not matter much to the note being played. But in the very high notes, called the altissimo range, the professional players tuned their vocal tract — adjusting their tongue, jaw, pharynx, larynx and glottis, the middle part of the larynx where the vocal chords reside — to the note they played. Amateurs, not capable of this trick, could not play these notes. “It seemed pretty clear there was something happening in the vocal tract,” Mr. Chen said. “In hindsight, it really makes sense now.” The researchers expect the same effect for other wind instruments — they are now testing clarinets — and perhaps also brass instruments like trumpets and tubas.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/blog/nba_exper...urn=nba%2C66363 Could 6'8" Brittney Griner play in the NBA? By J.E. Skeets Tuesday, Feb 12, 2008 12:01 pm EST For those of you in the dark, Brittney Griner is a 16 year-old junior in Houston, Texas who leads the area in scoring, blocked shots, dunks, and being tall. She stands 6'8" (for now), wears a size 18 men's sneaker, and has exploded onto the high school basketball -- and YouTube -- scene over the past year. Last night, Griner posted 29 points, 13 rebounds, 11 shots and nine assists in helping her Nimitz High School to a first round playoff win over rival Westside High School. On top of that, she dunked twice. Hard. Yahoo! Sports has the video. Check it out. Which brings us to our question: Could Brittney Griner one day play in the NBA? She seems to have some of the tools. She's 6'8" and growing, is just 16 and, from the limited footage that I've seen of her, looks pretty quick on her feet and comfortable with the ball. With a few solid years of coaching, you'd have to at least consider it a possibility, right? Well, no. And here's why: While Griner's 6'8" frame might make her the swat-blocking Gheorge Muresan of Texas women's high school basketball, it would mean nothing in the NBA. Can you imagine her trying to defend someone as athletic and strong as Rudy Gay or Andre Iguodala? It would be impossible. I'm still convinced that the first woman to play in the NBA will actually be a short, lightning-quick point guard with great decision-making skills and a jumpshot. You know, like, Jose Calderon ... but ... um ... not.

For some reason, I thought that the "weekend" sale was gonna last through today (MLK Day). Had a second order ready to go yesterday, but the J&R website was down periodically and couldn't get it in. Logged back on today and it was too late. Oh well, ya can't win em all (too many titles - 850 and dropping-anyways). -
Do these codes only work for long-time members? Haven't been a BMG member since the 90s when I was a teenager and they tried to stick me with a lame Michael Jackson remix album as the Selection of the Month, so I'm waaaaaaay outta the loop.
