  1. February 6: Bernie Glow, trumpet, 1926
  2. (who?) Rozelle Claxton Wyatt Ruther Thanks!
  3. The link goes to a Walter Wanderley cover...please try again.
  4. (who?)
  5. February 5: Gene Schroeder, piano, 1915 (who?)
  6. The original MMM was about 64 minutes (each side was exactly 16:01, except for side 4 which was "16:01 or infinity" because there was no lead-out track - the music looped in on itself). If this performance is 75 minutes, I wonder if they do an 11 minute repeat of the last few seconds, or whether Ulrich Krieger has added some noise of his own...or whether they're allowing for some improvising!

  8. February 4: Tony Fruscella, trumpet, 1927 John Stubblefield, alto sax, 1945
  9. Ed Sherman grew up listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Police on a record player in his parents' Hazard, Ky., living room. Now 29 and a registered nurse, Mr. Sherman still likes to listen to classic rock the old-fashioned way—and just bought 1970's-era Marantz stereo on eBay. He's also in the market for a Rega record player. "I'd like to complete that vintage sound," says Mr. Sherman. For many, $1 songs and $100 players have replaced $20 CDs and $1,000-dollar stereo systems. But not for Mr. Sherman and other audiophiles, many of whom cling to cabinets full of music components and milk crates of albums. Hardly Luddites—many also have MP3 players and listen to Internet radio—these are the folks who refuse to give up the superior sound of older technology. More here: WSJ
  10. I'd like to construct a website where I can post family photos. My needs are fairly simple: 1) Some control over the layout of the page; I'd like to write captions under the pictures. 2) A home page with various folders (subcategories) of specific topics 3) A login and password for the site. Does anyone know a good solution? I don't see where Photobucket, Picasa, etc., can do all of this. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  11. Am thinking of buying an IEM. Any recent thoughts? I'm considering Klipsch S4i because it has an iPod control, but may be shortchanging myself. Jazzbo, do you still still still, after all these years, love your B&O's? Are they at all noise-isolating?
  12. Well, it says "and tracks that have never been on CD before." So perhaps they're dubbed from vinyl. One candidate may be Lloyd G. Mayers (who?). I'm curious about the business side of it. The title is "Douglas on Blue Note," when, as we know, he never produced for the original BN. Many of the dates he produced for United Artists were eventually released on CD with a BN logo. And this new compilation is on Douglas Records. So it'll be interesting to see how this all sorts out.
  13. Interesting little note: "This exclusive compilation of Alan Douglas productions on Douglas Records from the Blue Note/United Artists catalog boasts a stunning line-up and features both successful classic recordings and tracks that have never been on CD before." Amazon
  14. February 3: Lil Hardin Armstrong, piano, 1898 John Handy, alto sax, 1933
  15. Most are gone by now. The only ones left are the Curtis Amy, Bennie Green, and Tal Farlow.
  16. Also James P. Johnson, piano, composer, 1894
  17. RIP. Coda and Sackville were both very notable undertakings.
  18. Thanks for the tip! That's a great deal.
  19. Interesting sighting: Bird's Eyes, Vol. 11. The only volume thus far, but still... tho, this series really needs the info from the liner notes (dates, personnel, etc): eMusic
  20. How is this listed on iTunes? I only see the first disc. I am on Itunes Canada. A few months ago I bought "Monday Night At Birdland" which has the following tracks : "Walkin', All The Things You Are, Bag's Groove and There Will Never Be Another You". The album cover art shows Hank sitting and holding his saxophone and adjusting his mouthpiece. The release date is Jan 01 2009. Hallmark 2009. Now six more albums have been added. The album cover art is all the same. Background blue cover, with writings in red. All from 2009 Makin Friends Records. There is "Monday Night At Birdland" identical to the one I bought above. And there is "Another Monday Night At Birdland" with the following tracks : "It's You Or No One, Jamph, Nutville, and Wee". Denis Interesting. The others are not available from iTunes USA. They do have 3 additional boots (using the same photo that appears on Hank's "Third Season" BN release) that contain much of his '50's BN work; label name is "Hallmark." For when you care to send the very best, I guess.

  23. January 31: Benny Morton, trombone, 1907 Bobby Hackett, trumpet, 1915
  24. Tubby Hayes, tenor sax, vibes, flute, 1935
  25. IMHO, this is one of the great jazz boxes. The presentation is thoughtful, the graphics are great, and the booklet is sublime. There's a great, long interview with Sonny, and he discusses this period in depth. At the right price, you should buy the box just for the booklet.
