THAT'S a great first show. Yeah, thanks. I had been listening to the Mothers for about 2 years at that point. Asked my parents if I could go with my older brother; they were dubious, but said yes - I'm still amazed at this. We bought tickets in advance for the late show, which started at 11:30. After synagogue Saturday night, we took the subway to the Lower East Side with a friend of his. My brother and his friend separated from me while we were on line - he said someone outside the Fillmore gave him a pair of orchestra tickets. So I sat by myself in the balcony. I remember Joe's Lights, the aura of the Fillmore, and the great sound system. I went home alone, and got home around 5 AM.

I think he was the kind of guy who did things like this to elicit reactions, which he'd then use as material.

It's an OK record. Songs are on the short side. Dex's sound is midway between his '40's sides and his Blue Notes, and the tunes are upbeat. As you say, there's not much mid-50's Dex available, so you might as well complete your collection. Let me put in a good word for the Stan Levey date, "This Time The Drum's On Me" (Bethlehem). Great Dex, and really nice arrangements for a sextet. A lot more polished than the other 2 dates.

Mindy Smith has a lovely voice, as you've noted. Have you heard Nickel Creek? Their album "This Side" is pretty good; produced by Alison Krause. -
Frank Zappa and The Mothers, Sea Train and The Insect Trust at the Fillmore East, May 1970. Flo & Eddie were in the band, but this was a year before the Fillmore 1971 album. Hmmm, might have been April. I was 14...

Herb Cohen managed seminal rock and pop acts of the 1960s and '70s including Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Tom Waits, and Linda Ronstadt. But Mr. Cohen's wildest act may have been his own, as a fireplug-shaped music-business eminence with a reputation for litigiousness. Mr. Cohen, who died March 16 at age 78, was a progenitor of the Los Angeles folk-music scene in the 1950s. His Unicorn Coffee House, where patrons could take a banjo down from the wall and entertain the crowd, was reputedly the first institution of its kind south of San Francisco. More here: WSJ

I bought the Grace product. Let's just say my experience differed from Marla's, and I returned it. I really didn't want to say anything, because Marla was so nice, and I did solicit opinions. But since you asked, here's why I didn't care for the Grace: 1. It felt cheap. It's mostly plastic, and reminded me of my first Norelco portable cassette recorder from 1971. And it was ugly, too; I may be shallow, but esthetics mean a lot to me. 2. I found the software maddening. Audacity is some sort of free Internet download software, and was not at all tailored by Grace for this unit. Let's just say that English does not seem to be Grace's first language, so the instructions they provide are sparse at best. 3. Most importantly, the sound was totally distorted. Off-the-chart peaking 100% of the time. I tried lowering the recording volume in Audacity, but it just lowered the volume - the signal still came through as peak distortion. Finally, I tried using Amadeus (which I love) with the Grace, but they would not talk to each other. So I returned the Grace to Amazon, and bought from them, for about the same price, a TEAC W-600R. Much better solution, at least for me. I already owned a good Marantz CD recorder as part of my stereo setup. So I transfer a tape (or a side of a tape) to a CD-R, and then edit/rip it on my iMac using Amadeus. The TEAC has two tape wells: one for playing a single side, and the other has auto-reverse, so that gives me a good amount of control. Plus it's from TEAC, a name I know and trust! :blush2: I hope that helps.

I don't think you need to delete it. In my experience, iTunes tells you it can't find the track, but gives you the opportunity to direct it to the new location. -
