Developed by JVC, the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System integrates three important digital audio functions: 1. The JVC 20-Bit, 128 times over-sampling high resolution analog to digital converter. 2. The JVC K2 Super Coding resolves the high resolution 20-Bit signal to the 16-Bit compact disc format while retaining the integrity of the low level information. 3. The JVC K2 Interface effectively eliminates time base jitter in the digital data stream. The end result is a compact disc of extraordinarily higher resolution than that of today's conventional compact discs. The 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System allows the listener to hear every subtle sonic nuance from the breathing of the musicians to the explosive crack of the snare drum. Enjo

Too bad, because the banjo has recently invaded Switzerland: http://www.banjomen.ch/seiten/home_e.html The only banjo on record I have (but I haven't checked my John Zorn collection yet ) is on Wynton's "Majesty of the Blues" (Danny Barker).

I don't know any phono preamp with gain control below $100. If the output from the preamp is too low, it can also be due to the phono cartridge's low output, since the amp has a fixed amplification factor. I guess the output control in your tape deck is just an attenuator and not an amplifier, so it's normal that you need to turn it up to the max. Another classic recommendation in your preferred price range is the NAD PP2: http://stereos.about.com/od/stereotoppicks/tp/phono_pres.htm A review of the NAD PP1: http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/nadpp1_e.html

Stranger that this hasn't been clarified in the US law itself. Maybe the subject is too touchy. In the UK, the record industry is aware that forbidding all personal copies, including copying one's CDs to portable players, is unrealistic: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/10/bpi_talks_ripping/

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1
Claude replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
AMG says: "After toiling with classical references in his music for most of his career, guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen finally dedicated himself to writing a concerto for electric guitar. The combination is not unique, as several rock groups, including Metallica, have been backed by full orchestras, but this is the first work of its kind to feature the electric guitar as the lead instrument in a concerto." The reviewer forgot Terje Rypdal, who has composed and played concerto-like works for electric guitar and orchestra, some before Malmsteen's op.1. - Undisonus (1990): http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:60zsa93gy23u - Q.E.D. This means it's also illegal to copy your CDs to your iPod
-
That is in the UK only, which has no private copying exception at all. In the US, there is a fair use provision which covers some forms of copying, but I don't know the details.

You can't say that because the article does not state whether or not the employees chased him off property. It just says the defendant claims they kept beating him once he was out of the store. If he was still on Autozone property, ie in the parking lot, they would be well justified. Maybe the rules are different in the US, but over here when it comes to self defense, it's irrelevant if the burglar is on your lawn or on the street. You can't beat someone up because he violated your property. When it comes to burglars, you are allowed to defend yourself with all means when your physical health is in danger, and you can detain a burglar until the police arrives. This has to be proportionate to the danger and to be reasonable. There is no way you can act revenge on the burglar just because he is still on your property.
-
I can't answer on the US situation, but in most european countries there are private copying exceptions which cover this situation. In return, rightholders are entitled to get their share from the levies that are perceived on sales of copying devices (recorders, hard drives) and blank media. The fact that taxpayer's money is involved is irrelevant here.

The difference between selfdefense and selfjustice. A line has to be drawn somewhere, and I'm sure the court will do that.

Influential composer Ligeti dies Austrian composer Gyorgy Ligeti, whose music appeared in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, has died aged 83. He was known for his avant garde compositions, including the 1962 piece Poeme Symphonique, which is played on 100 metronomes. His most famous works are those used in the Stanley Kubrick film, including Atmospheres and Lux Aeterna. Ligeti was born in Romania in 1923 to Hungarian parents, and later adopted Austrian citizenship. He began studying music at the conservatory in Cluj, Romania, in 1941 and continued his studies in Budapest. In 1943 he was arrested and, because he was Jewish, was sentenced to forced labour for the rest of the Second World War. Although Ligeti survived, the war claimed several members of his family - including his brother and his father. Playful After his release at the end of the war, he returned to Hungary, where he taught music at the Liszt Academy. His musical ambitions were constrained by Hungary's communist regime, with the result that much of his work from this period was based on folk music. Following the 1956 uprising, Ligeti fled Hungary, settling in Vienna, Austria. Here, he came into contact with avant garde composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Gottfried Michael Koenig. After this time, his writing became more adventurous and playful - often challenging the conventions of music and performance. Ligeti's 1961 work, Future of Music - A Collective Composition, consists of the composer looking at the audience from the stage, and the audience's reaction. He wrote in a variety of styles, including chamber music, opera and electronic music. In 2004, he was awarded Sweden's prestigious Polar Music prize, and judges praised him for "stretching the boundaries of the musically conceivable". Ligeti is survived by his wife, Vera, and a son, Lukas, a percussionist who lives in New York. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5072858.stm

I missed this thread last year. I confess to like "Crime of the century" as well. I had the LP when I was 12 years old, and recently - 25 years later - I bought the remastered CD.

I can understand that they don't want to keep 3-4 versions of the same album in print (OJC, K2, SACD, now RVG). It would be logical to delete the OJC release of these titles. But maybe they have loads of them in stock, while the K2s would need to be repressed, so they dump the K2s.
