Sometimes configuration data get lost during a Windows crash, without the hard drive being physically damaged. You can check your hard drive with the chkdsk function: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html The parameter /f will try to fix the data errors. To test the physical integrity of the hard drive, you can usually download a DOS test tool from the hard drive manufacturer homepage. To find out the brand and model of hard drive you have without opening the PC, go to the Windows device manager and look under "disk drives".

Is it a hardware shutdown or a Windows shutdown? In the first case it looks like a hardware defect (excessive temperature due to defective fan) that makes the Bios shut down the PC. In the second case it could be a virus/worm (forgot it's name) that does this. Usually you'll get a warning message saying Windows will shut down.

If you do a Google search on "refoam", you can find a lot of information and offers on that subject. Refoaming speakers generally changes the (bass) sound slightly, as the replacement material is not identical in it's physical properties to the original foam.

Cruise was only kidding - News sites take placenta-eating comment out of context and report it as fact

This seems to be the same Blakey live material that has been reissued under Marsalis' name on other (probably bootleg) labels: All American Hero Wynton According to AMG, the sessions were recorded in 1980.

I have made a report (in german) of a Munich LP shopping tour on another forum: http://www.analog-forum.de/wbboard/thread....7512c679315fc22 (Miles' post from february 2004) The best shop I've seen is phonX in Fraunhoferstr. 26 Lots of german pressings from the 80's (ECM, Enja, MPS and others) can be found. Unfortunately the LPs are not sorted alphabetically, so you'll have go through the whole jazz section. But it's worth it.

Anyone with kids in the US, this is a must to look at.

This is the info form Jazzmatazz: http://jazzmatazz.home.att.net/upcomingcds.html And the CD Universe link for Soultrane (not much info yet): http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7065702 As Soultrane has already been released as an OJC, K2 remaster, SACD (on MFSL), it has to be the RVG remaster. Same for "Walkin'". But I'm not so sure about the other titltes, since they are not amongst the most popular Fantasy titles.

I agree. Just because the boy hasn't been raped by the woman doesn't mean he hasn't been abused. The abuse is more on a psychological level. The fact that she was a teacher and may have used her authority on him could also have played an important role in the assessment of the abuse.

The Comcast videos are for comcast subscribers only. There is a 4 minute video linked in this CBS article. The boy is amazing! http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/10/...in1195835.shtml

LF: Clean, non-promo copy of Sonny Simmons, "Ancient Ritual"
Claude replied to Bol's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Mine is a promo copy too. I bought it used in Brussels 10 years ago. -
I checked their website. Apparently the main benefit of Squaretrade for the buyer is that they check the identity of the seller, something that Ebay doesn't do (please correct me if I'm wrong). But the main goal of the company is clearly to sell a trust seal to Ebay sellers, while the additional guarantees offered to buyers are minimal. Here's an article from 2003: http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abn/y03/m05/i25/s03

Some more info on the "MiniCD" format, and Universal Music's "PocketCD" initiative from 2004: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniCD http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/06/21/universal_pocket_cd/ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3828575.stm

Uhh... technoduffery on the mp3 player front...
Claude replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Most MP3 players play the tracks in alphabetic/numerical order. If you name them 01 Track title.mp3 02 Track title.mp3 ... or Miles Davis - Kind of blue 01 So what.mp3 Miles Davis - Kind of blue 02 Freddie Freeloader.mp3 ... it should work. The CD ripping software usually allows you to define the output format of the file names. If you have a larger capacity player holding many CDs and which supports folders, it's advisable to organise each CD in a seperate folder. It will make it easier to navigate from album to album. Folder: Miles Davis - Kind of blue Files: 01 So what.mp3 02 Freddie Freeloader.mp3 ... -
I have a few CD singles in that format. One came with a 12cm-adaptor, a plastic ring. CD-Rs in that format were also popular for promotional data presentations. Some even had a square shape 3" CD-Rs are still produced, but they are only avaiable from specialist stores: http://www.discmakers.com/shop/ItemDetails...ID=CD-035-00003

Thanks Tom. That looks very promising. How is the sound?

Something even weirder, given the consequences, happened in Germany: http://www.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/16/0,1872,2271568,00.html A retired man had declared to the tax authorities his income from various stocks: 11.000 DM ($5000). Later he found out it was in fact more - 17.000DM - and he phoned the tax authorities in order to correct his declaration. The person in the administration undertook the correction in the computer program, but instead of replacing 11.000 by 17.000, typed 17.000 right behind the 11.000, so as if the man had declared an stock income of 1.100.017.000 DM = $550 million. The rest of the tax procedure was fully automated: the man received a letter requesting him to pay $280 million taxes. He phoned the tax authorities, who promised to correct the error. But this seemed more complicated than it appeared. Some time later, his bank account was frozen by the administration because of the $280 million tax debt. The man hired a lawyer who wrote a letter to the administration, requesting them to repair the error immediately, and the administration accepted. Now comes the weirdest part: because of the rigid german lawyer regulations, the lawyer had the right to receive as "compensation of expenses" for his actions (the letter) a certain percentage of the amount of the case, and because the case was worth $280 millian, he had the right to receive $2.3 million, to be paid by the conceding party, the public administration.

In my experience, by observing Ebay prices on certain hard to find discs, I noticed that the final bids are often substantially lower when Paypal payment is not possible. When a OOP Mosaic set is sold at an unusually low price, you can be sure that it was an US-only, no-Paypal auction. So at least with sought-after items, offering Paypal pays off in the end, despite the 3%.

I agree. He's one of the best trumpeters in Germany. He plays great as the main soloist on Bob Brookmeyer's 2003 "Get well soon" album. But his own records are smooth jazz.

Miles Davis - The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions
Claude replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I think the video footage of this Miles/Trane performance is so essential that it wouldn't make much sense to reissue the sound only, especially if the sound has been recorded on film tape only and the sound quality is limited. They could release it as a bonus DVD with the CD set, as has been done with Monk TV material: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...=lk_organissimo http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...=lk_organissimo -
Maybe he is today's Chet. Isn't that the image of Chet outside the jazz scene, a young good looking guy singing with a soft voice and playing mellow trumpet sounds? This works very successfully for another Chet clone, german Till Brönner who regularly tops german "jazz" charts, alongside Diana Krall and the like.

With all respect to Rudy, I feel that his quote on the back cover is a bit pretentious: "I remember the sessions well, I remember how the musicians wanted to sound, and I remember their reactions to the playbacks. Today, I feel strongly that I am their messenger" Imagine this on the Jackie McLean "Fickle sonance" RVG (his remaster with the "AM sound").

Jim, if you can add amazon.de, it will contribute a few bucks too. If you need any help with their affiliation program (because of the german language), feel free to ask me. http://partnernet.amazon.de/gp/associates/...3048427-5509615 -
