  1. SPV was declared insolvent already in May: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/content_dis...d7d67dcda85032c What is the current status of MPS? Some reissues seem to be released by Promising Music, and others by Universal Music Germany http://www.promising-music.com/ http://www.jazzecho.de/label/mps/
  2. The "piano nazi" (in reference to Seinfeld's "soup nazi") is at it again. I don't know if the article in the german Spiegel magazine is objective or if Jarrett rubbed the reviewer the wrong way, but the "review" of Jarrett's solo concert in Berlin is entirely about his erratic reactions to audience noise. http://www.spiegel.de/kultur/musik/0,1518,654823,00.html (Terrible) Google translation: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=ht...en&ie=UTF-8
  3. They have different remastering. The RVG mastering is more controversial.
  4. Sometimes, it's better not to break a thread title into two lines
  5. That list omits quite a few more famous names: Paul Bley, Joe Lovano, Tony Coe, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Ellery Eskelin, Wadada Leo Smith
  6. "Soul Station" would be an essential upgrade, since the RVG remastering is quite messed up (muffled treble, distant sound). I have the 45rpm LP reissue mastered by Hoffman, and it was a revelation to me who had only heard the RVG CD before.
  7. Yes, the level of the AP SACD is lower than the RVG CDs, but that doesn't matter for the sound quality. This can easily be compensated with the volume knob. When people say that a CD sounds "loud", it means that the dynamics have been compressed. Subjectively, this makes the sound louder, as the lowest level is higher. It should also be said that RVG already applied compression to some of his Blue Note recordings. So even with the best mastering, they tend to sound "loud". IMHO, his Prestige recordings from the late 50's sound better than his Blue Note recordings from the same time, for which he often favoured a "fat", spectacular sound.
  8. If ECM wants to sell a book for >$50 successfully , they should reissue "Sleeves of Desire". http://www.amazon.com/ECM-Sleeves-Desire-C.../dp/1568980647/
  9. Really? The Blue Note recordings between 1958 and 1962 are in my opinion by far the best in terms of sound quality. It's the later ones (1964-) that are hit or miss, with often indistinct boomy bass or tinny sounding piano (which can also be due to the instrument of course).
  10. European classical labels releasing SACDs don't seem to have any problems getting their discs pressed in time. So I don't think that worldwide there is a huge backlog.
  11. But the projects are at least partly about the same Blue Note titles. Hoffman mastered them for 45rpm LP release for Harley's Music Matters label previously. http://www.musicmattersjazz.com/titles.html So Harley hired Hoffman to master LPs, and then a couple of months later he hires Yoshida to master the same titles for CD. This looks like unnecessary duplication of work to me, compared to the Analogue Productions way to do it for ther LP and SACD reissues http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost...mp;postcount=11
  12. Thanks, I didn't know that. Does that mean that both Steve Hoffman and Alan Yoshida will work on the original tapes, or will Yoshida just master the XRCDs from hi-rez digital files that Hoffman made during the LP mastering session?
  13. I don't agree with that. First, the AP LP and Music Matters LP and XRCD releases, all mastered by Hoffman, have frequently been delayed, so it's not certain it has something to do with SACD pressing capacities. Second, these are released on an audiophile label, which usually has prices >$25, even for CDs. So I don't think the SACD format makes them significantly more expensive. Third, from an audiophile label people expect a state of the art digital format, which Cd is no more since SACD exists.
  14. No relation, except that both formats mean to provide a higher definition sound (HD) HDAD is a DVD, HDCD is a CD http://surroundablog.blogs.com/surroundabl...ition_dad_hdad/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Definiti...patible_Digital Higher definition is good, but in my experience, with old analogue recordings, the mastering quality is much more important for the end result than the resolution of the format.
  15. Weight is not that relevant. In principle, heavier vinly should be flatter and stabler. But the big difference is in the mastering quality. Some new reissue LPs (many of those selling for $10-20) are made from CD masters, even in case of old analogue recordings. Others are new transfers from the original tapes, by top mastering engineers. The difference in sound quality can be huge, but there is no general rule on which type of reissue sounds best.
  16. I could only imagine using cheques on that account, combined with ID fraud, to withdraw money. Cheques are now rarely used in Europe, so maybe that's why people here don't worry publishing their account numbers online, when there is no money withdrawal possible using cheques.
  17. How can you take money from someone by knowing his bank account number? That's not how the Nigerian scams work. Here in Europe, many companies show account numbers on their website.
  18. There can only be one avatar per forum member. When it is replaced, it takes effect instantly. If you see different avatars in different threads for the same member, the problem is your browser cache, which needs to be refreshed.
  19. The stereo and mono releases use different mixes.
  20. It has nothing to do with cookies. Either the avatar on the server is not being replaced because of some file restrictions (new avatar too big), or you continue to see the old one from your browser cache although the new one is online. In that case, emptying your browser cache will help. I'm actually seeing the "socialism" pic, so your new avatar is not on the server.
  21. New Jimmy Cobb SACD to be released October 6th: http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/6128
  22. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Xfi_CjKPrQ
  23. Seems reasonable to me to lock the doors when leaving the house far enough not to have a constant eye on it. It would be embarrassing for the police if burglars entered the homes through the unlocked rear entrance (or even the front) while the owners are invited by the police to spend their time in the street.
  24. There are probably many foot faults being made in pro tennis that are not being called, so it was unfortunate for Serena that it happened at such a crucial moment. But her reaction was so unprofessional and socially unacceptable, that she should be sanctionned more that just a penalty point. Not a fee, because this has no effect on millionaires. She should be banned for the next Grand Slam event.
