I think it looks pretty good. One improvement is now it's easier to find the Mosaic Select sets, which were buried in the old site layout. Also, for those just getting into Mosaics, I think the new format will help. If it spurs Mosaic sales, I'm all for it (unless, that is, it's a race for items on the Last Chance list ).

I have the vinyl version of Night of the Cookers, Vol.I. Can't say I like it much. Overly frenetic, overly loud, no real shape to the performances. Questions: Isn't there a Vol.2 (I think there is) and is it more of the same? Are both performances on CD together? Was wondering if the comments on the posts above refer to the vinyl version or a CD version.

Thelonious Monk Book
Leeway replied to marcoliv's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I'll believe you on the Chris Sheridan Monk book, but $110.00?! That's pretty expensive. It would be nice if they released a more reasonably priced paperback edition. Here's another option: [url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/019512166X/ref=pd_sim_books_2/104-0299446-8622303?v=glance&s=books] Thelonius Monk Reader, ed Rob Van Der Bliek -
Saw a small announcement in today's Washington Post business section that EMI Group announced a 13% drop in music sales. They report music sales are "slumping" and said "the market will continue to drop, hurt by competition from other leisure products and piracy. " And this with Norah too! Perhaps does not bode well for that little old subsidiary of EMI, Blue Note.

I noticed the address listed on the label affixed to the back of the paintings. I lived about 5-10 minutes away from her, in Queens, NY. Anyway, I have to say her piano playing is superior to her painting. She should have stuck to music. Even as "primitives," her painting is not very good. Their interest lies in their association value. BTW, does anyone know if there are any published photos of her?

I was lucky enough to find a really nice vinyl copy of IDLE MOMENTS. It sound even better than the CD (no surprise I suppose). It's a terrific album that bears repeated listening; vinyl really brings out its warm, funky, groovy qualities. I just love that album.

For me, I really like: THE CAT WALK BYRD IN HAND OFF TO THE RACES

Just read that Diana Krall plans to marry Elvis Costello. An interesting musical marriage. Perhaps Elvis can influence her to more more edge and grit in her music. If one were breeding for musical development, this would seem a good pairing. So, who should BN's favorite songbird ( B) Norah Jones marry? What match could we hope for that might make her a more classic BN artist? BN really doesn't have much of a tradition of female jazz artists. Maybe, with astute "breeding," we can put Norah more solidly in the jazz camp, maybe get her in the "great tradition" of BN jazz. Hey, if it works, we might even heal the great breach in the BN camp between pro and anti-Norah BNBBers.

If you think about it, there's no reason for BN to reopen the BNBB. This forum, especially, but also AAJ to some extent, are doing their work for them, at no cost to BN. And doing it better, I might add :rsly: Another thread I posted seems to indicate that everybody is still buying BN product, which is all Evered and crew apparently care about. Some, like myself, have cooled off a bit in their BN acquisitions, but few probably stopped altogether. Smart execs like to develop that sense of community. For example, Porsche assiduously cultivates its drivers and fans. They know that loyalty translates into long-term stability. Like BN, they are a niche product-they can't afford to lose a generation of customers. BN's current managers are clueless-right out of Dilbert. Well, I better stop, I'm starting to get mad all over again

Bertrand, You're right, there were no new compositions in the first set That ticked me off, as it was advertised, and was a prime reason why I bought tickets. Having said that, what WAS played was really good. Some differences from the 2nd set were: Played Twice, Brilliant Mississippi (??), Bolivar Blues, Ruby My Dear, and, I think, Little Rootie Tootie. I thought the tentet really swung. But TS ought to be more careful about what he promises.

Does anyone know if Mosaic or BN sales have declined at all since the closing of the BNBB? Since the old Board was a hotbed of Mosaic enthusiasm, with many sets sold from Board member recommendations, I would think that Mosaic sales may have dipped over the last couple of months. On the other hand, most of us are fanatics or addicts (in a nice way ) about Mosaics, so who knows. As for BN sales, I doubt that the Board closing has had much of an effect. The Norah tsunami would be sure to overwhelm any pockets of customer dissatisfaction with BN. Anyone have any data or inside info on any of this?

OK, I'll try to get any titles, and I'll keep an eye out for you. I'll be wearing a dark blue dress shirt, dress slacks and blazer, as I'll be coming from work to the concert. Hope to see you there.

Bertrand, I'm going to the 7:30P show. I'll be coming straight from work. Don't think I could remain awake for the later show The promise of some new Monk music lured me to buy tickets. We'll see what that's all about.

I have tickets for the TS Monk concert this Friday at the KC. TS is supposed to perform some previously unknown pieces by his father. Don't know what that's all about, but expect to find out Friday. Anyone else going?

Absolutely right. I should have specified that I was talking about sessions starting with RVG's appearance on the scene. I will admit, however, to having a blind spot for pre-RVG BN recordings. I know they are there, but I often don't give them much (enough) consideration. I guess I identify Rudy with Blue Note as much as I do Alfred or Francis.

Good call! I don't have those albums, so didn't know that. I know there are others, but I don't imagine I know them all. Another one that comes to mind is Dexter Gordon's "Our Man in Paris," which was recorded at the CBS Studios in Paris in 1963 (according to the liner notes). C,mon, according to the folks at AAJ, this is supposed to be the BN "fanatics" (aka "dregs" ) BB. Demonstrate your BN knowledge!
-
Just for fun, test your Blue Note trivia knowledge: Which Blue Note studio albums were NOT recorded in either of Rudy Van Gelder's studios? . Let's use 1970 as the cut-off date for the recording sessions.

They sure made it sound spectacular. I figured the Sonic Solution was some kind of noise reduction system. I will have to A/B the RVG and the "Lundvall" versions of "BOTC." As for "Vols 1 and 2," I have a chance to pick up the RVGs cheap, so, thanks to the comments here, I will go ahead and get them, and sell off my other copies to the local used CD store (and get a trade on something else of course

I know that Rudy's work on the RVG edition of "Birth of the Cool" has received widespread praise. I was curious what others thought of the RVG editions of "Miles Davis Vol.1" and "Miles Davis Vol.2"? Is the sound quality greatly improved from earlier CD issues? Also, regarding "Birth of the Cool," how do you think Rudy's remaster compares with the "Complete Birth of the Cool" edition put out by Capitol Jazz, which has the live sessions? The CD states that the studio sessions were remastered by Mark Levinson, and "edited" by Kurt Lundvall (any relation to Bruce??) "using Sonic Solutions with High Resolution 88.2KHz sampling rate." I don't know what the hell that actually means but it sounds impressive. How does it compare with Rudy's work?

What music besides jazz do you listen to?
Leeway replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Depends on my mood. I will go for fairly long periods of time listening strictly to jazz. Then, when the mood strikes, I will go on a classical music jag, particularly piano music- sonatas, concertos, etc. I love classical piano. My appreciation for classical violin is also growing. I'd say, in the course of a year, my listening is split 50/50 jazz/classical. I actually like rock as well, but my listening to that is restricted to the car. It just seems to go better there. -
What do y'all think of Fred Hirsh? As far as the piano trio form, I guess Mehldau must be considered the frontrunner.
