  3. True, not even in Tokyo. The vinyl is pristine, I think I'll be spinning this for the rest of the week. I have the Sony Master Sound cd set too so I'll be able to check if they tweaked the sound or not. Just out of interest I checked my copy of Dark Magus it's ; 28AP 2165 6 , can't work out if this is a reissue etc. Discogs no help. Anyone know? Looks like a first. The Miles Ahead web site give the same numbers: http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Disco.aspx?id=Dark-CBS

  6. I seem to recall that Bang's Vietnam albums go pretty deep.
  7. Let us know how it goes. Maybe my concert was an anomaly.

  9. SWEDISH AZZ - Mats Gustafsson, Dieb 13, Kjell Nordeson, Per-Ake Holmlander, Erik Carlsson. Not Two - 11" . 7, 10, 12-- yep. 11"? Was 11" the standard of the old Swedish record industry, or just a Mats' caprice?
  10. Happy Birthday David!
  11. I'm actually ambivalent about Ribot. Some of his recordings sound good, although like sonnyhill, I'm not keen on his singing or his rock god pretensions. I've only seen him once, early this year, with his Ceramic Dog Trio and guest Mary Halvorson. The trio was incredibly loud, and Ribot louder than anyone else; unnecessarily loud in my opinion. Ribot completely drowned out Halvorson, who can dod the shred thing too. Why invite a guest then play right over her? It seemed a very self-indulgent display on Ribot's part. It seems like he demands to be the center of attention, and so often just hammers away. In comparison to someone fairly similar, Nels Cline, he comes off as the inferior talent. Looking at this, it seems a harsh assessment, but I am open to further thought on Ribot. I just recently picked up 7" vinyl, Ribot and Deerhoof, which I liked, although nobody sung on that one! Some of his online clips are good too. So I remain ambivalent pending further evidence.

Those Soundcloud clips sounded pretty good to me. I think we're into a new phase of Braxtonia from the sound of it. CD Universe is offering the box at $90, a lot but not completely out of line. You know you want it
  14. That definitely has my interest. xybert, try to pick up the original Tamarindo release next time Clean Feed has a sale, you can get it for half price. Avoid the "live" version; it has production problems. Christoph Erb is a new name to me. Anybody heard him? Lots of good people on his releases. Erb is Swiss, but spends a lot of time in Chicago. His Veto releases have always struck me as being of the "let's get some guys in studio for a few hours and just roll the tape" type of free improv w/o much forethought as to what they were going to do. They're sort of the modern free improv version of '50s blowing sessions albums -- not bad, but certainly no one's best work. Of the Veto releases I've heard the best one was Erb's album w/ Keefe with two bass clarinets and two cellos -- name of it completely escapes me at the moment. Scott Thanks for that input. Check out these YT vids of Erb. I like what I hear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSPK8ja6MBQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcLhQPaGi7I

  16. Ribot sings on "Ceramic Dog." I don't know if he does on the "VV" CD just out, didn't think he did.
  17. THE OSLO TAPES - Mats Gustafsson, Lasse Marhaug. Bocian LP. This is perhaps even skronkier than the Rempis/Marhaug LP, NAANCORE. I think Mats is using more "extended techniques" than Rempis does. Mats also seems to be playing more within Marhaug's soundfield, where Rempis sort of plays over and against it. But Mats generates a lot of power in his approach. I really like both of these LPs.
  18. Nice photo! (Gallery seating?)
  19. Message to Our Folks: It's Chuck Nessa's Birthday! Go Home Nice Guys and Celebrate Full Force! Fanfare for Chuck!
  20. I guess that you tried to contact Red Toucan and/or Frank G. himself (both have websites)? Until your post, I always took it for granted that the CD was generally available, but that doesn't seem to be the case now. I picked up my copy used at a local record store. I've been a Gratkowski geek for a while. Last year I went up to NYC and saw him play at about a half-dozen different venues, in a variety of ensembles, over a period of several days. Great learning (and enjoyable) experience for me.
  21. CURARE - Daunik Lazro (bari, as), Jean-Francois Pauvros (electric guitars), Roger Turner (d, perc). No Business LP.
