  1. I've heard really good stuff about this one-- Ivo used to play a lot with Rosie Hertlein (admittedly not Matt) so is used to having strings in the group. Another one I've heard good things about: Loved seeing Ivo in concert. A very cool cat.
  2. How is the sound on those Cien Fuegos releases? They've generally been pretty good, and I think this one is especially good, plus the vinyl is quiet. There is one problem, at least on my set: the run off grooves are not very effective and the needle can run out of the groove into the label. First time I've seen that.

  4. I'd like to see sides made up of free jazzers. That would be amusing! I suspect a good many wouldn't make it down the pitch. OPENED, BUT HARDLY TOUCHED - Brotzmann, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo. Cien Fuegos 2LP. Strong enough to blast everyone off the pitch.
  5. I've grown to quite like this . I want too sure at first but it works pretty well . Tom Rainey on the xylophone! How do you like that? I love Ivo. If you see him live you can understand that his passion is intense but somewhat paradoxically under control. In another post earlier today, I called it fire and ice. I love that high pitch, just like I like it with Urs Leimgruber. It makes an almost physical pressure, it gets into your brain, and it gets beyond the polite mannerisms that many sax players are constrained by. He does make a lot of records, and I can't keep up with them. But with the right partners, he makes some powerful albums.

  7. His playing at it is more problematic to me than if he really tried, and I think supports my thesis. I'm reminded of Gertrude Stein's comment about Oakland, "There's no there, there." I feel rather the same way about Ribot. Compare him to, let's say, Matt Shipp. There is no doubt with Shipp that there is plenty of there, there. His artistry is absolutely grounded and unmistakable. I just don't get that with Ribot really. He is available for an occasional good time, but not more.

  11. I don't think anyone has focused in on the appraised value ($15,000 for the group). Does it seem right, or put it another way, is it likely to bring that in the open market? Seems high to me. The other question, if these were to be sold, would be whether to sell them individually or as a group. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Hard to establish values in this area, but I think the appraisal is overly-optimistic. $6,000-$8,000 seems more likely.

  14. That's a good story Chuck. Let the circle be unbroken, as they say. SYZYGY - Tarfala Trio - Guy, Gustafsson, Strid - No Business 2LP+7". Wonderful. I noticed this time how, in various spots, how Mats G sounds surprisingly like EP, and that starts right at the first minute of LP1. Parker casts a long shadow in music like this so I guess it's not surprising after all.
  15. I would agree with that, with maybe the possible exception of "The Bridge," which, while I don't hold in quite as high esteem as many others do, still is quite a strong record by any standard. I've already commented elsewhere about "Our Man in Jazz," which to me is Sonny not very comfortable in the new suit he's trying to wear, whereas you might say in the 50s, it all fit together quite comfortably and impressively (apologies for tortured analogy).

  18. Just returned from the Garry Winogrand exhibition at NGA. I had been trying to go for weeks, but other things kept getting in the way. Memorial Day weekend absolutely the worst time to go see it, but I managed to get in and out of DC with some trouble but could have been worse. Anyway, I really enjoyed the exhibit. It is indeed a massive exhibit, but I found it allowed one to really "get" Winogrand. It might have helped too that I was growing up, and going to school in NYC at roughly the same time as Winogrand was taking his street photos. It was like looking back into one's past, but with a new twist. It may have given them an added resonance for me. Anyway, it left a strong impression on me. The exhibition goes to NYC next (at the Met). I also stopped into the German Expressionist prints, because I have a interest in the subject. Kirchner really stands out among the group exhibited. I'll probably go back for another look before it closes.
  19. I'd feel the same. Carpe diem. The album you don't get is the one you often spend a lot of time regretting, right? Great group, Bailey and Stevens to me are the Fountainheads, and there is Mr. Watts too .
  20. I feel it has a "bite" that was somehow missing on his other recent trio sets (which seemed to be smoothing out the edges a little too much). I liked "Root of Things" - if nothing else, it represents Shipp's current state of the art.
