The mono BNs ARE nice to have and listen to mostly cuz YOU CAN'T GET 'EM ANYMORE. But are they actually better? Cuz I believe the ones issued after "Moanin'" are fold-downs of the stereo recording. RVG quit running concurrent mono & stereo recorders about this time. Fold-down = BAD... -_- My own opinion about them? I'm still gathering data...

I do have a stereo Lp of Unit Structures. I found it earlier this year, on the 'bay, still sealed. I think I got it for around $30. I consider that a bargain for a sealed one. (perhaps even a steal...) Though sealed, it's not perfect, but still pretty good. Blue & White Liberty pressing...is that an original? They were a part of Liberty then, eh? (I need to force myself to MEMORIZE BN label history...) I also have the JRVG. Perhaps I'll get to hear the TOCJ one day. Guess I won't seek a McMaster. Yep Chuck, that whole story can get kinda tiresome. I do find a little EQ can do wonders for some mastering jobs. (Unless there is some "unfixable" problem, like too much NR...) I do also realize, however, not everyone is able to custom EQ their systems. I believe Hans (J.A.W.) has stated in the past that he has no tone controls on his system. So he is pretty much at the mercy of the mastering engineer...

On my table last nite: Rahsaan Roland Kirk-Volunteered Slavery God, I love this album! What he lacks in vocal ability he make up for in sheer enthusiasm. Probably my favorite versions of "My Cherie Amour" & "I Say A Little Prayer." Side 1 is just crazy-good, especially the choir. And then Side 2 comes on and blows you away with sheer power! "I'm sorry folks, we started off a little slow at first. The problem was I wasn't looking at my piano player, and I've been smokin' a little...so when I came out here, I was completely blind"!!!

That's true! The Contemporary mono sound is outstanding. Good 'ol Roy DuNann...untouchable!!!

What's next on your YourMusic.com queue?
Parkertown replied to GA Russell's topic in Recommendations
What is that? A library copy? Hopefully shipped today from my queue: Stanley Turrentine-Never Let Me Go (RVG) -
Hey, there's actually one on eBay right now, but crap, it's up to like $32 + $5 s/h already!!! It ends tomorrow morning. Perhaps the word "dying" was a bit strong, eh?

Gee, do I like that album...? Actually, I'm dying to hear a MONO one...

Peter, Well that could be something, I guess. I don't know how to contact "buyers" on eBay though...only "sellers." Suggestions? Perhaps I'll poke around there...Thanks, Peter...everyone. -

So far, my internet searching hasn't indicated to me that this was ever issued as a JRVG...is that correct? Anyone? Buehler? -

Thanks for your take, Larry. My friend says Don has always been a hero, not just because of his ability to solo quite well, but because of his great ensemble work. Just a solid, all-around player. The search continues... -_- P.S. The Colorado Wind Ensemble had a concert this past Saturday that I attended with my wife and a buddy. I love this group as they choose very interesting music to perform. (And I just love the 4 percussionists + 1 tympani onstage...hell, they're all over the place! ). But at this concert, their grand finale was a pretty recent composition...I forget the name of the composer...where's that program... It was called "Godzilla vs Las Vegas." Everything those words conjure in your mind was present in this piece of music. The musicians even added screams, dog-barking, costume changes, marching feet, onstage cocktails...all within the course of this piece. The program even listed a storyline you could follow that illustrates the various sections of the piece. Las Vegas' counter-attack was by an army of little, miniature Elvises, referred to as "Elvi." I've never heard anything like this...absolutely incredible! -

I was wondering if this was one of those... Thanks a bunch, Chuck. I really appreciate the info. I've still got some time before I have to make or break. I know if anyone knows, it's gotta be the troupe that hangs out here. -

Also, the mp3s on emusic.com are VBR encoded by the LAME encoder, the best out there... A much better option to 128kbs AAC.

Or perhaps someone knows of a transcription of the liner notes online somewhere? (Or could type it up for me?) That would suffice. I'm pretty I sure I could create a decent-looking layout based on a couple of the 10" JRVGs I do have (Jutta Hipp 5tet, the two Elmo Hopes,...). So...let's bump this thread up for some exposure... -
Could someone help a bruddah out? I'm trying to make a little replica of this 10" lp for a buddy. He's a tuba player in the Colorado Wind Ensemble and he totally digs the playing of Don Butterfield, who is featured on this set. This came out as a JRVG...could somebody please post a scan of the back cover? I've got a good one of the front. My audio source is the Conn edition of his 10" BN lps... This would be so

Actually, I believe he's just about to sell out... BTW, welcome to the board.

Going to see the McCoy Tyner trio Jan. 22nd

Thanks gents...I'm getting excited! I've never seen any jazz cats of this "stature" in person before. -
I picked up a pair of tickets to see this show at Denver's Paramount Theater...always an excellent venue for shows. The wife and I will be in the freakin' 3rd row!!! Anyone seen and/or know what he's playing like these days? I'm psyched...a mix of standards and originals, perhaps? Any insight would be much appreciated...

Hats off to Paul Secor! Have a great day, bud!

The first one you listed is the new TOCJ-24bit series. The second one is the old "BN Works Series" disc. The third is the JRVG. That's the one I've got. It's pretty good, if not a little bright. I wish I had the "BN Works" one though... This session is also available in the Grachun Moncur III "Mosaic Select" set.
