Anyone listen to jazz on a reel to reel? I picked up some jazz tapes but don't have a 7 1/2 spped machine. How does the music sound coming off tape compared to lps? Looking foward to listening to Kind of Blue on tape.

I always assumed because of the scarcity of the black label pressings the green label came in the sixties. Can anyone post sequence of stereo labels and dates? I don't think Van Gelder's drum sound on the Blue Note dates has ever been equaled in jazz recording, partly because of the room they were recorded in, post 1959.. Reverb had to be added during mastering of Contemporary dates to make up for the small room early dates were recorded in. To my ears the Contemporary sound became more" hifi "as time went on with extensive equalization being used on the drums for example, with midrange being notched down resulting in that airy sound on the cymbals.

Jim Can you recall any details of Birds Of A Feather cd you mixed? I love the sound of this recording! So much air on the horns ! Mics used? (I can't tell by the pics.) I guess the mastering had alot to do with it too.

I just picked up 10" Gerry Mullligan with Chet and Zoot on Pacific Jazz label for ten bucks on EBAY . Described as excellent. I guess it was a good deal, but who knows?

This Roy Haynes cd is tops in sound and performance. Dave Holland is awesome. One of the best recorded jazz sessions audio wise that I have ever heard.

JACK BRUCE songs for a tailor I picked this up at a garage sale and was surprised to find it is much better than I thought. Lineup of Chris Spedding, Jon Hiseman and Bruce really cook as a rhythm section. Usually available on EBAY.

Mosaic Andrew Hill set went for a little over $100 bucks a few weeks ago which I thought was a little wierd.

it has been about 4 years since I did a comparison, but at that time I compared the best Meridian cd player which was A rated and cost 4 k to my Delta transport and PS Audio Ultralink IIdac with the HDCD or whatever it is called filter using MIT Zip cord which makes a BIG difference. I also compared the sonic frontiers top of the line cd player. I was surprised to find the cd players sounded like a noise boxes compared to my set up. The difference was so huge in almost all aspects that I still believe cd players could not compete with seperates due to putting the transport in the same box as the dac raises the noise except in maybe the most expensive current cd players. ( which I am doubtful about.) Other seperate combos I have heard also seemed to have lower noise floors that cd players.

I have a couple of vintage Prestige records that have DW stamped on the back cover. Both are less than good listens, despite looking near mint. Could DW mean "defective wax"?
