  1. Whoa...leaving it out they are...not cool... See http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/19/AR2008061902831_5.html "Cheney hoped that a winter's rest would help. His last major league win came June 9, 1964, against Kansas City. He went to Hodges in the sixth inning and told him the pain was unbearable and that he couldn't continue. "Hodges said, 'Ah go on out there; you can do it,' " according to Jim Hartley, who interviewed Cheney for Nats News, the newsletter of the Washington Baseball Historical Society. Cheney finished the game but told Peary he had tears streaming down his face by the end. When Hodges came by his locker to congratulate him, Cheney said, "That's the last win you're going to get out of me, you son of a bitch." His next start against Minnesota lasted three innings."
  2. I think they are leaving out the part about Cheney never forgiving manager Gil Hodges for ruining his arm and shortening his career, making him pitch through a lot of pain. This is before Hodges' sainted days with the Mets.
  3. Trying to think of how to describe Duquesne Whistle. Does it sound like old pop, like Hoagy Carmichael old? Are any of the songs you've heard country sounding? Pop Stoneman and Roy Acuff did songs about the Titanic.
  4. That's a most interesting thing. It's not CDs that suck, it's albums. And if you mainly want individual songs, no point in buying CDs. This is a bit of a paradigm shift. MG well, i guess you could also call it the return of the "single" ... It's cheap, because even singles had two songs, side A and side B
  5. Depends on the post season. I think Dusty Baker should be considered too. In the AL who's managing in Oakland? Shoot, if Baltimore gets to the post season, gotta consider Showalter!
  6. First time I saw the video, I was just: What The Heck Was That???????? I still am, as a matter of fact. Strange little posse he's got walking around. And you don't know why!
  7. Shows up for me. Try this path: http://npmusic.org/artists.html and look under Recent Music: Robert Jardell One of his best!
  8. Games People Play by Robert Jardell, in Cajun French (Merci, Monsieur Joe!) http://npmusic.org/Robert_Jardell_Games_People_Play.mp3
  9. Not holding runners on is something our pitchers will have to work on next season! Probably our greatest weakness.
  10. Where did you find this piece of furniture? Or was it specially built for you? I am looking for this kind of shelving
  11. Sat next to John Cohen of the New Lost City Ramblers at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in the audience for a performance by Tracy Schwarz and Ginny Hawker in tribute to the Carter Family.
  12. It's a conspiracy to introduce fried chicken to the Dodgers' clubhouse! Seriously bad move to lose Gonzalez, who was the Red Socks' better hope than Ellsbury.
  13. Reminds me to give my wife instructions for logging into the control panel of my website and account information for the server company. That website I certainly WOULD like someone to continue after me. As for my lps and cds, I doubt anyone would want them.
  14. Master of the one-liner. Good writer! Unique delivery.
  15. Ichiro? In their early days it was just maddening how bad they were at trades! The All Star team was full of players Houston had traded away. Joe Morgan, Rusty Staub, Denis Menke, Jimmy Wynn. Cesar Geronimo. And a bunch more.
  16. Big series coming up tomorrow in DC with Atlanta coming to town. Is it payback time for the Braves, or time to lengthen our lead over them? Jordan Zimmermann on the mound tomorrow.
  17. Throw Matty Alou in there, although his career batting average from 1960-1974 was .307, and he had a few lean years in the '60s.
  18. Thank you for this post. Incredible story.
  19. Tough news about Melky! That'll hurt! Nationals were lucky to come out with a series win today. Yes, General Manager Mike Rizzo has said all along this season that Strasburg will be shut down in September. Hard pill to swallow for the kid, who wants to see post-season, and some team veterans who have voiced their opinions on the matter this week. Sounds like they may be allowing themselves to think the post season is a possibility. Would not have guessed it. I started the year hoping to be over .500!
  20. Yes, he's never pitched a full season. Coming off TJ surgery, I can understand the shut down. He's already tailing off somewhat. Cardinals won last year without Wainwright. I guess the thinking is that the team has a strong enough staff with Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmerman, Edwin Jackson, and Ross Detwiler. Especially if Strasburg in September is not the same as Strasburg in May or June. It's still very early, so we don't know if the Columbian District is even going to the playoffs or getting knocked out early by the extra wild card team this year. The way MLB has set up the post-season, it's for the hottest, streakiest team at the moment.
  21. Pence breaks down the Nationals' success (they can hit and pitch!)
  22. Oooh, that was tight! Farrah wins the 5000! Another one of the great events of the Olympics! Can't wait for the men's marathon tomorrow!
  23. Tough field for the men's 5K race! Can we see a repeat of Farrah and Rupp? I would bet on the Ethiopians they beat in the 10K.
  24. Country music got better for a little while, I think, when he was on top. I don't bother to listen anymore. Hope he can pull his life together. Sounds like a bitter breakup with his wife/manager.
