  3. Yeah, any of the Dutch Fontana titles would be great, but prying them out of Alan Bates' hands would be mighty difficult I would think. I was pretty sure that Spiritual Infinity was a mass of aborted takes and nothing complete exists. Somebody was going to do the Colbeck a few years ago but I guess it fell through. Fine LP. The Marzette on Savoy is a good idea because a lot of people want to hear it, but it's not exactly earth-shattering music. The Patty Waters track is by far the best.

  9. A VERY busy weekend. Went to the hellishly overcrowded Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival yesterday and today. Saw Jerry Douglas (w/Viktor Krauss & Omar Hakim), Patty Griffin, Jon Langford & Skull Orchard, Hot Tuna, Carolyn Wonderland. Wanted to see a lot of other stuff (Richard Thompson, Dave Alvin, Kinky Friedman, Rosanne Cash, etc.), but it's become impossible to navigate the crowds - and no fun. Too bad that it's become too successful for its own good. Went to a charity event with Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe doing each other's tunes last night. Very entertaining. If you want to read more, Joel Selvin breaks it down. Tomorrow night - Henry Threadgill & Zooid, part of the SF Jazz Fall Season.

  12. I am pleased to report that notwithstanding the "poking" incident that took place after my wife "sealed" the house (and triggered the angry screaming in her head), things have very much returned to normal. In fact, I have to say that within a couple of weeks I honestly began to perceive what I can only describe as a "lighter" atmosphere in the house. Almost a calm, or just some sense of a change to a sense of ... I don't know, a lack of foreboding or any feeling of dread? Its hard to describe, but I have to say its how I felt, the atmosphere was lighter, and nothing has been going on here since then. But I didn't bring this thread up to report that. I brought it up to report something paranormal but actually sort of pleasing. Three years ago on July 4th my Father-in-Law died unexpectedly of a massive heart attack. He was mere weeks away from moving to his dream home in Arizona (he died in Wichita). As per his wishes, he was cremated and in the fall of that year his ashes were scattered in a particular spot he had picked out in AZ. My wife and her sister took care of this, and while they were doing it, some pictures were taken of the area. Two of the pictures had what could be called "light anomalies" - it was a sunny day, this was an area with trees, and two pictures had sort of grayish dark areas or shadows. We didn't put too much stock in the pictures simply because, with big trees you simply can't say whether or not these are natural shadows or not, no matter what the grieving family wants to believe. Fast forward to last month. My wife decided to sell her pickup truck in order to pay down some debts. Her plan was to fly out to Wichita with her sister to buy a replacement vehicle from a dealer who was her Father's closest friend (and she knew would give her a really good deal). So in June she books the airline tickets and informs Patty of this. Patty has saved on her cell phone one of the pictures from Arizona, but she does not keep it on the screen. That's reserved for her dog, Logan. The next time Patty took out her cell phone after Sue told her their flight schedule, her cell phone was displaying the picture from Arizona. So they are in Wichita and she is completing the purchase of her SUV. They are sitting in the office awaiting the paperwork when Patty pulls out her phone - and once again, "Dad's" picture is on the screen. Now I do not know of any cell phone where changing the picture on the screen is a simple matter of hitting a couple of buttons, which one could suppose might be done accidentally. You've got to push a button to bring up settings, you have to choose what setting you are changing, you have to find the picture and select it. We do not have any logical explanation for how the picture changed, except what Dad's friend said when they showed it to him - "Bob is just saying 'hi'." I can't find the pictures on the hard drive but if I find the disc I will upload them.
  13. They ARE in the reissue game. Stollman is at the helm. I gripe but then again it's great to see this stuff out and getting decent distribution/press, and the ZYX licensed issues, Calibre/Get Back "licensed boots," etc. are long OOP anyway. Still, uncovering some of the archived material in a creative way would be nice. If repackaging is their MO, I'd like to see something like a "College Tour" boxed set with music from Ran Blake, Patty Waters, Burton Greene and Sun Ra. As far as new material, the best thing they've done IMO is the Talibam! CD.

  16. Wow, I didn't expect anybody else (let alone two people) to mention Chad & Jeremy's version. It was my introduction also, and was the first LP I ever owned (a gift from an older brother). I even remember seeing them on the Patty Duke Show back in the day.
  17. So my instinct (combined with whatever I've read in the past) about Patty Loveless was pretty dead on I guess. I knew there was something that kept me away from her. I'm not a big fan of that Nashville production. I've heard her harmonies on albums by Emmylou, Buddy and Julie Miller and I think Jim Lauderdale too and I've liked her voice well enough. I may dip my toe in and try Sleepless Nights. Re: Jim Lauderdale I have around eight or so albums by him and I find them very consistent. I think he's known in Nashville more for his writing than his solo albums but like Buddy Miller he's got a cult following including a lot of top musicians in the genre. He's always got great talent on his albums and there's no Nashville sheen on any of the albums I've heard. I saw him about a year ago play a solo gig and as great a songwriter as he is, he really knocked me out with his singing.
  18. I've been curious about Patty Loveless for a while now but haven't made the plunge yet. As far as Geoff Muldauer goes, I've seen him a couple of times and own a few of his albums and I think he's extremely talented as a singer and a guitarist. The Secret Handshake and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, the latter a solo recording from a concert in Germany are both excellent. I've seen Maria many times too and her Richland Woman Blues is an acoustic blues showcase with many guest musicians helping out in a very cohesive way.
  19. Yes, I agree about Patty Loveless. Her version of Busted is great! In fact, much closer to the spirit of the tune and lyrics than Ray Charles' overproduced version, imo. For Norman Blake, Blind Dog has the songs I enjoy most.
  20. Thanks, Six String. The Dave Alvin and Buddy/Julie Miller albums you mention I know - marvellous records all. I don't know Jim Lauderdale's music and Alejandro Escovedo is a completely unknown name to me. Thanks for the recs. Someone I like very much - even though she is in many ways living in the heart of the Nashville Beast - is Patty Loveless. Was enjoying the second of her two more bluegrassy albums this afternoon: And as the definition of 'contemporary' has become wondefully elastic, a word for Norman Blake. This one was fun earlier today: On the purely instrumental front, I've always loved this one: Jerry Douglas' albums can get a bit overproduced, but this one is joy from start to finish.
