All the cool kids are doing it:

Julius Hemphill - Dogon A.D. (Arista Freedom). As everyone knows, amazing music. My Arista reissue is neither as cool as the Mbari original or (by all reports) as great-sounding as the new I.P. CD. But, hey - it took me a long time to find an afordable near-mint copy, and I'm kind of fond of it.

Check out the line-up on this album: Ronald Shannon Jackson, drums;

Billy Bang, violin;

Byard Lancaster, alto and soprano saxophones;

Charles Brackeen, tenor and soprano saxophones;

Vernon Reid, acoustic and electric guitar;

Erasto Vasconcelos, percussion;

Melvin Gibbs, electric bass;

Bern Nix, electric guitar

RSJ doesn't get much attention on these pages, but the guy was doing some cool things on the cusp of the 80s.

He certainly was. He brought four different editions of the Decoding Society into the Caravan of Dreams in the mid-1980s, and I was fortunate to hear 15 or 16 sets of these groups. And in all those sets, he only played one drum solo!

Yes, I can believe that. I think he was more interested in total musical approach than soloing. You can see that on "Eye On You."

Something to wind up the listening session.
