jeffcrom Posted March 28, 2012 Report Posted March 28, 2012 Wildflowers 5 (Douglas). Two side-long pieces - one by Sunny Murray with an excellent quintet, the other by Roscoe Mitchell in front of percussionists Jerome Cooper and Don Moye. Roscoe's "Chant" is another reminder that Mr. Mitchell's imagination works very differently than the rest of ours; I'm glad he shares it with us. Quote

Clunky Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 (edited) Omer Simeon - plays... Ace of Hearts (UK) Dug this out to hear Omer Simeon's version of " Beau Koo Jack" played by his trio in 1929 and then Earl Hines big band version from slightly earlier that year on "Earl Hines Chicago Highlife" (Connifer)UK . The Simeon version wins but the Hines album has some excellent QRS piano solos from Dec 1928. The Hines' LP liner admits that these rather dusty transfers( by JRTD) were made from dubs dating from the late 30's. Not sure if these have seen remastering from the original discs or parts since this Connifer Lp was issued in 1988. Edited March 29, 2012 by Clunky Quote

Clunky Posted March 29, 2012 Report Posted March 29, 2012 Bill Coleman a Paris 1936-38 - (Parlophone) UK - strong transfers Swing jazz of the highest order, as with many LPs of this era highly idiosyncratic programming ( ie not chronological) but the music really flows, with outstanding playing including Alix Combelle on clarinet. Vol 1 next. Hawk's influence on the tenor sax players evident. Quote
jeffcrom Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 Evan Parker - Saxophone Solos (Incus). I was questioning myself after a concert by a free-improv saxophone player recently left me cold. This record reminds me that yes, there is a real difference between the pedestrian and the inspired. Quote

six string Posted March 30, 2012 Report Posted March 30, 2012 (edited) Walt Dickerson - Shades of Love (Steeplechase direct-to-disc). A stunning solo performance, in equally amazing sound. I've never seen that one before. I just found a copy of Life Rays on SteepleChase but that looks like another one I need. I love his playing and I just discovered him four or five years ago so I have a lot of catching up to do. Edited March 30, 2012 by six string Quote

How can such a nice looking record play so badly? It's records like this that give vinyl a bad rep. Edited March 31, 2012 by Kevin Bresnahan Quote
