Herb Ellis, Nothing But the Blues (Verve)

Great record! I'll have to pull it off the shelf later.

I play the CD often. The CD adds a few hard-to-find JATP performances from their Paris show in 1958.

Yes, Getz and Eldridge together is a fantastic combination. My copy, the cover is falling apart, but the LP is in terrific condition; trumpet label version sounds really fine.

Johnny Lytle Trio - Blue Vibes [Jazzland]

my copy's seen some action in previous lives. In fact, it sounds a bit like the above sleeve looks but amongst all the "atmospheric" background noise the music shines through gloriously.

Next up..

Steve Williamson - A Waltz for Grace. ( Verve 843 088-1 )

That's a good one.

Williamson has made a few live appearances in the last couple of years after many years seemingly away from the circuit. I hope he becomes more active still and records again

Johnny Lytle - The Village Caller [OJC Riverside reissue]

that's my Lytle's listened to. Need to get some more

Charles Tyler - Eastern Man Alone [ESP]

a recent purchase that knocks me out each time I play it, which is often at the moment. The use of cello and bass, no drums, is masterful

Nice one.  I always enjoy the Lytle Riversides.   They always leave me with a good feeling.

Chuffed with today’s £5 find. Good as the CD version sounds, this stereo LP from 1969 is way better and in fine nick. Even came with a pristine accompanying Ember booklet covering this release and a Ben Webster that they did.

I've never heard any of the Johnny Lytle Riversides, listened randomly to a few tracks on the streaming service as wasn't too excited by what I heard. I'll admit it's no way to any music you care about but it serves as a screening process.

NP a couple of favourites...neither new..

Air------Air time-------(nessa)  I noticed that Threadgill has a new one coming out soon on Pi

Annette Peacock-------I'm the one ------( RCA)  I've been listening to a few recent reissues ( Bamboo) with Paul Bley

I don't think you should look for anything too deep in Lytle's music.   But some of it is quite uplifting. That's how I find it.  Plenty of others will differ.

That's generally right. But this one, 'People & love' on Milestone, DOES go deep.

It's a brilliant album.

Here's a track.

I agree. Good time 'groove' music but then I'm a sucker for vibes most anywhere

I've wanted that LP for a long time. Pockets have to be quite deep too, sadly

It's on CD, as a twofer with his previous LP 'The soulful rebel' which is more like the usual Johnny Lytle kind of thing.

Here it is, on Amazon UK, for £9.21 new.

PS If you want the vinyl, you can get it from Discogs. £21-41, which is cheap for the quality of music you get. But it depends where you live and where the sellers are.

Yes, thanks. I've been hovering over the Discogs LPs for a while but many aren't in great nick and postage from US etc...it'll be the CD in the end

Thanks for that Lytle recommendation. Ordered the CD , should be here for the weekend. The prices for the LP seemed OTT but a   silver disc will do fine.

If you don't get on with it let me know...

Goodness, Clunky!!!! That was unexpected.

I hope you enjoy it nearly as much as I do.

Thanks MG , your soul jazz ( or whatever term one uses) are of the highest order. My Achilles is that I like or love  most styles of quality music and so from time to time some grease is called for. I was spring cleaning today and had two Groove Holmes LP targeted for passing on ( Living Soul and Soul Message). I played them both and changed my mind even if neither is a masterpiece. I think we are incredibly lucky here to have your expert ear .... although it's always costly

making do with Larry in lieu of Johnny. He'll do, definitely

Great minds.... I was playing this very title earlier today. Althea Young's vocals sounded particularly dreadful on this Liberty pressing, I don't recall is sounding as bad an the Mosaic set. Possibly because you can hear what she's doing more clearly on the LP. 🔥

 it's not the strongest track in his oeuvre or on this album
