HutchFan Posted December 27, 2018 Report Posted December 27, 2018 Last night: Sonny Stitt with Strings: A Tribute to Duke Ellington (Catalyst, 1977) This is a "with strings" record that actually works well. The string arrangements -- calling for 4 cellos and 4 violas; no violins! -- are by Bill Finegan (of Sauter-Finegan Orchestra fame). Quote

Remember this one coming out - almost by stealth. Probably paid for byprofits from John Handy ‘Hard Work’? Will dig out the 2LP set. HutchFan Posted December 28, 2018 Report Posted December 28, 2018 Dudu Pukwana - In the Townships (Earthworks/Virgin, rec. 1973) with Mongezi Feza, Biso Mngqikana, Harry Miller, and Louis Moholo Anyone know who plays piano on this record? No one is credited, even though there's a piano player throughout. I know that Pukwana started as a pianist, so it would plausible for him to have played the piano. But that would have required over-dubbing -- and the music doesn't sound over-dubbed; it's VERY live-sounding (and fantastic!). Makes me wonder if the pianist is Chris McGregor. I suppose he could have been prevented from being credited/named for contractual reasons. Just wondering. Quote
HutchFan Posted December 28, 2018 Report Posted December 28, 2018 Now on to . . . Sheila Jordan & Harvie Swartz - Old Time Feeling (PAJ, 1983) Quote

Came out originally on the ‘Caroline’ subsidiary in Virgin’s early days, when they were a bit more adventurous with jazz releases. Quote

Steam LP. A nice, somewhat disregarded date; the two tenors play off each other well. Isn't Babbington a perfect onomatopoeia name for a bassist? I saw this in a store yesterday for $10 but didn't buy it, mainly because it was pouring rain so I didn't want it getting soaked. Was I wrong? Should I go back and buy it today? sidewinder Posted December 29, 2018 Report Posted December 29, 2018 (edited) Soul Note - nice memento of seeing Knepper, Adams and Richmond around the time this was recorded. Possibly the same European tour ? 3 hours ago, Kevin Bresnahan said: I saw this in a store yesterday for $10 but didn't buy it, mainly because it was pouring rain so I didn't want it getting soaked. Was I wrong? Should I go back and buy it today? I would say ‘yes’, although I haven’t heard it. Can’t be too many Steam LPs that made it to the USA as this was Stan and Jackie Tracey’s own label and I think this title is one of the more obscure ones. According to the bio, Stan enjoyed gigging with Sal. Edited December 29, 2018 by sidewinder Quote
