Mel Rhyne 'Organ-izing' Jazzland, mono)

with Blue Mitchell and Johnny Griffin

I was checking this out on the listening station at my local dealer and the organ playing didn't do much for me so I decided against it. Did I make a mistake?

Not a great fan of Mel Rhyne either but that album is pretty good with Blue Mitchell and Griffin in fine spirits!

Thanks, Mr. Griffin is what made me want to check it out. The want list is long and the dollars are limited so some have to get left in the bins.

Andrew Hill 'Compulsion' (BN NY USA mono). Played at 6am in the morning at volume it is the aural equivalent of a bracing cold power-shower. Magnificent !

Will be spinning the vinyls of 'Judgement', 'Smokestack', 'Our Thing', 'Point of Departure', 'Grass Roots', 'Lift Every Voice' etc. over the weekend.

Sidney Bechet/Buck Clayton/Vic Dickenson/George Wein/Arvell Shaw/Kansas Fields--Concert a l'Exposition Universalle de Bruxelles (Vogue)--This is an excellent concert but unfortunately the pressing is defective.

If I am reading the French liner notes correctly, I believe this is said to be Sidney Bechet's last recording. He sounds wonderful as usual.

Actually it was Bechet's next to last recording. His final recording session (for Vogue) took place in Paris in December 1958. Understand he did not sound wonderful on that finale date :(

Now spinning:

Hampton Hawes 'This Is Hampton Hawes, Vol. 2, The Trio' (Contemporary, mono, 70s reissue)
