sidewinder Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 I've been thinking of going for a 2nd-hand vinyl copy of the OOP Charles Brown Mosaic. This is one that I've not heard too many opinions on so any thoughts/opinions from follow board members who own it would be very much appreciated. Thought that this one might be worth going for as I've really enjoy listening to the Nat King Cole Mosaic. Thanks in anticipation ! :rsmile: Quote
J.A.W. Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 This set is absolutely wonderful - in small doses. Get it while you can. Quote
jazzbo Posted June 14, 2004 Report Posted June 14, 2004 Can't comment on the lps, but I have the cd set. . . . As Hans says so rightly, fantastic in small doses. . . . I'd surprised if anyone could listen to it disc after disc. . . . But if you like that LA RandB sound from the day, this is a great set to savor! Quote
chris olivarez Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 You could do worse than pick up this set. Quote
Abution II Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 IMHO, the Amos Milburn set is in the same vintage as the Charles Brown. It is amazing that it has been in print this long. Definitely worth looking into, especially since you are open to vinyl. Quote
brownie Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 That was one LP box I got when it was released just because I trusted Mosaic back then. If they put it out, it must be good. It was. I keep rotating it off and on and enjoy that one. Yes, in small doses! I was not very much aware of Brown's records then. I'm a huge Charles Brown fan by now. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 15, 2004 Author Report Posted June 15, 2004 Sounds like I should get hold of a copy of this set. Thanks for your comments. I've also had my eyes on that in-print Milburn set for some time. Now if only Mosaic would do another one of those 20% off LP sales.. Quote
ghost of miles Posted June 15, 2004 Report Posted June 15, 2004 Lovely, lovely set. I'm a big fan of late-40s club blues, so I can listen to it in more than small doses. There's also a nice amount of Maxwell Davis here (the tenor saxophonist/arranger/composer who also appears on the Milburn set); if you're a fan of his work, another reason to pick up the Brown. I had long hoped that Mosaic would do a set of Brown's pre-Aladdin Three Blazers music, but finally snapped up the Chronological Classics instead. Quote
