ghost of miles Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Now that Universal seems to be re-opening the doors to the vaults, perhaps a Giuffre Verve Mosaic is feasible again. I haven't heard much of this material beyond what showed up on the Konitz twofer several years ago, and I know that THE EASY WAY is slated for re-issue soon. Have to think, though, that this would be a good collection. Quote
JohnS Posted May 7, 2003 Report Posted May 7, 2003 Giuffre Verve's are fine. Fortunately Polydor France brought out Ad Lib, In Person and The Easy Way years ago. You are righ they could do with reissue, they would make a nice 2cd set. Quote
Claude Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 A Giuffre Verve box set on Mosaic would be great, but as they already did a big Giuffre set this probably won't happen. And there aren't that many unavailable Verve sessions. Jimmy Giuffre AMG entry - Fusion and Thesis are currently available on ECM ("1961") This alone could be an obstacle for complete Mosaic set. - Piece for Clarinet and Strings is in the "Konitz meets Giuffre" twofer (now OOP but fairly easy to find) - The Easy Way will come out in the "LP reproduction" series The remaining are: - Ad Lib - In Person - Seven Pieces Interesting to hear that the first two have once been reissued on CD. I guess they are extremely difficult to find today. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 (edited) Of course, one has to wonder how accurate AMG is in this (or any) case. If I'm not mistaken he was a guest on a "Music Inn" lp, and of course there are albums of his arrangements that might be included, for example the Anita O'Day and Sonny Stitt ones. And there's a chance that there are unreleased sessions perhaps. I was stunned to discover how many unreleased Lee Konitz sessions there are on Verve! Edited May 10, 2003 by jazzbo Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 The Music Inn album with the MJQ was on Atlantic and the Giuffre portions (Da Capo and Fine) are included in the Mosaic Capitol/Atlantic JG set. The Anita O'Day material arranged by Giuffre is, quite logically, included in the Mosaic Anita O'Day set. Mike Quote
mikeweil Posted May 10, 2003 Report Posted May 10, 2003 Another candidate for that set would be Herb Ellis meets Jimmy Giuffre, which Giuffre arranged and played in the sax section, but did not solo on. Was reissued in the Verve Elite Edition a few years ago and is oop. Quote

Tjazz Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 (edited) - Piece for Clarinet and Strings is in the "Konitz meets Giuffre" twofer (now OOP but fairly easy to find) Claude, thanks for the info. I'll go get this one. It's on Half.com for under $20 Edited May 16, 2003 by Tjazz Quote
jazzbo Posted May 11, 2003 Report Posted May 11, 2003 Yeah, I have the Atlantic sides, but I read this online as also a Verve appearance, must have been a mistake. I know the O'Day is in the Mosaic but there is plenty of precedent for duplications within Mosaics. I still wonder if there is a wealth of unissued material, but likely not. Quote
Late Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Somewhat related, and just out of curiosity ... has anyone ever seen the original covers to Fusion or Thesis? If anyone could post a link or image, that would be great! These will probably always be my favorite Giuffre sides (though Free Fall is up there too). Still haven't picked up the disc with Friedman and Phillips. Quote
mikeweil Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 Do you mean the Jazzline CD with extracts from concerts at the Olympia in Paris in 1960 and 1965? The audience reactions are wild on this one; at least half the people there certainly was not prepared for the freestyle improvisations of Giuffre, Friedman, and Phillips. They play one Carla Bley and Ornette Coleman tune each, had Coleman been to Europe before 1965? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 Ornette went to Europe in 1965, I believe that was the first time. FWIW, Europeans had already experienced Don Cherry, with Sonny Rollins and with the NY Contemporary 5 (both 1963) as well as Ayler and Cecil. But I think the situation with the Giuffre audience was probably due to the fact that maybe some people expected to hear west coast/cool jazz and weren't up to date on where Giuffre had gone since that period. Late Posted June 22, 2003 Report Posted June 22, 2003 Thanks Shrugs. I'm guessing those are your vinyl copies? Very nice. Quote
Tjazz Posted June 25, 2003 Report Posted June 25, 2003 (edited) You can get THE EASY WAY from Deepdiscountcd.com http://www.deepdiscountcd.com/index.cfm?re...he%20easy%20way for $9.97 (free shipping / no tax) Edited June 25, 2003 by Tjazz Quote
garthsj Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 All of my books and discographies are packed up while I am going through a major renovation, so I can't provide the essential details... but as I recall Giuffre had two lovely appearances on albums by Harry "Sweets" Edison ("Sweets"), and Herb Ellis ("Ellis in Wonderland") on Verve, neither of which have been reissued on CD, in this country at least. Anyone out there confirm this information? I may be wrong on my titles ... it has been some time since I sold all of my LPs... Garth. Quote
P.D. Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 Giuffre and Edison are indeed on Ellis in Wonderland, but I think that's it.. maybe they may be found together as part of a Big Band date, but that is the only small group The tenor on Sweets, is Ben Webster. If Mosaic did a " Mosaic" they would most likely leave out thr Ellis recording as it's Ellis' date not Giuffres.. maybe a Select An Ellis on Verve Mosaic would be quite nice with a good varity in the music. ghost of miles Posted June 29, 2003 Author Report Posted June 29, 2003 Having heard THE EASY WAY now only makes me want a Verve Mosaic even more. Quote
garthsj Posted June 29, 2003 Report Posted June 29, 2003 Thanks P.D. Ah Yes!... Ben Webster is the tenor on "Sweets" .... I wonder why this terrific album has not been reissued? ... it is the best of the Verve Edison's IMHO. Giuffre's playing on "Ellis in Wonderland" includes several clarinet takes as I do recall .. and another prime candidate in the reissue stakes. Garth. Quote
BruceH Posted July 2, 2003 Report Posted July 2, 2003 Having heard THE EASY WAY now only makes me want a Verve Mosaic even more. You said it! With the earlier Guiffre Atlantic/Capitol Mosaic now OOP for some time I don't see why they would be shy about doing a complete Guiffre Verve, aside from the usual legal/copyright issues, of course. mikeweil Posted July 2, 2003 Report Posted July 2, 2003 (edited) I'm guessing those are your vinyl copies? Did you ever compare the sound of your vinyl copies of Fusion and Thesis with the sound of the ECM? Another thread on this board about ECM discusses the influence of Manfred Eicher's aesthetics on the sound of his reissue. Edited July 2, 2003 by mikeweil Quote
