Chuck Nessa Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 BIG DEAL FOR SOME AMERICANS. Forgive me, but I read none of the earlier posts. I just want to say that Brando and Elvis were "hugely" responsible for a bunch of us. Quote
chris olivarez Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Actors make their living usually being someone their not and I can understand how that could get the better of someone. Brando was very good at what he did. Brando was a character both on and off the screen.RIP. Quote
RainyDay Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 (edited) "Battle of Algiers," folks. Do you mean "Burn"? Well, sure "Burn." Who's the idiot that said "Battle of Algiers"? Hey, forgive an old lefty for getting her leftwing propaganda confused. I be gettin' old. BTW, I'm listening to a best of by Gil Scott right now. It ain't Marlon but it's in the same spirit. Larry Kart Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 Another choice Brando line from "One-Eyed Jacks," directed at fellow outlaw Ben Johnson, who had said something tauntingly disrespectful about Brando's girlfriend: "You scum-sucking pig!" (As Brando says this, he turns over and dances backwards from the table at which they've been sitting, all the way to the far wall of the room--an incredible piece of business.) The girl I going out with at the time the movie came out (my first love, as they say) had an interesting history with the Brando clan. Her folks were friends of Brando's parents from way back, and they also were tight with a very good painter, Richard Loving, who had been Brando's roommate (along with Wally Cox!) when Brando first came to New York. So she was heavily invested in "One-Eyed Jacks" being a great movie, and perversely I was eager to poke holes in it -- which wasn't hard to do, because it is kinda incoherent and pretentious at times, but also very very good I eventually came to realize. Anyway, we almost came to blows over it. True love. Quote
bertrand Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 I haven't been able to eat butter since Last Tango In Paris. Bertrand. Quote
skeith Posted July 3, 2004 Report Posted July 3, 2004 when i think of Brando I think of his awesome performances in: On the Waterfront Streetcar Named Desire Last Tango In Paris The Godfather Apocalypse Now I am sure I am forgetting others but I might mention that my favorite Brando western is called "The Appaloosa" - I much prefer it to ONe-EYed Jacks. Of course he made some real stinkers and seemed to squander a lot of his talent, not unlike some of our jazz greats. Bye "Terry" - As you leave us I think you can feel as triumphant as you did in the final walk in On the Waterfront. Quote
