montg Posted July 26, 2004 Report Posted July 26, 2004 The August issue has results from the critics' poll. The ususal suspects, for the most part: Jazz Album: 1. Dave Holland--Extended Play (ECM) 2. Basie (the Columbia reissue) 3. Miles @ Blackhawk The Mosaic Roy Eldridge was 9th. Snurdy McGurdy was 10th. Record Label: 1. Blue Note 2. ECM. 3. Palmetto 4. Verve (laughable) Alto: 1.Lee Konitz, 2. Greg Osby Soprano: 1.Steve Lacy, 2. Wayne Shorter Tenor: 1. Joe Lovano, 2. Sonny Rollins Trumpet: 1.Dave Douglas, 2. Wynton Bass: 1.Dave Holland, 2. Christian McBride Piano:1. Keith Jarrett, 2. GA Russell Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Thanks for posting this. I'm surprised Bill Frisell beat out Jim Hall. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 29, 2004 Report Posted July 29, 2004 Every year I buy the Critics Poll issue and add up the votes of artists who get votes both as established and 'rising star' (formerly TDWR). Kinda obsessive, but a lot of guys get hung up between the two. Perception is all.... Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 11, 2004 Report Posted August 11, 2004 (edited) Lists? Who need 'em? To me they are always subjective. Thanks for posting this. Edited August 11, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
JSngry Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 And how indicative of why today's "jazz" interests me less and less... Quote
Brad Posted August 15, 2004 Report Posted August 15, 2004 Jim sums it up for me. Downbeat is even less interesting. Quote
montg Posted August 15, 2004 Author Report Posted August 15, 2004 There are exceptions, for sure, but GENERALLY speaking, the quality of jazz criticism is light years behind the quality of the music. Quote
Brad Posted August 17, 2004 Report Posted August 17, 2004 Where's Metronome when you need them? Quote
