I'm interested in running down live performances of all of the KIND OF BLUE compositions that might have been recorded circa 1959 or '60, even going into 1961... I know that "So What" was caught live numerous times, as was "All Blues"... but what of "Freddie Freeloader," "Blue in Green," and "Flamenco Sketches"? (I have the Bill Evans Trio doing "Blue in Green" live at Birdland in 1960, but would like to find a Miles Quintet or Sextet version from around this time as well.)

Ashley Kahn book p. 160 only mentions AB and SW as being added to the working repertoire. I don't know if the others were ever played live.

Thanks, Mike. It's been awhile since I read Kahn's book, and I had some fuzzy memory of a statement to that effect.

As a side note... given the other material played by the '59-'61 Miles groups, I'm not sure "Blue in Green" or "Flamenco Sketches" would have fit in.

It seems to me there are, at least in part, differing attitudes and approaches towards a recording and a live performance. Part of it is to give the audience familiar tunes. Ever noticed how few of Coltrane's compositions showed up in his working band's repertoire?

I don't think any of Trane's compositions ended up in the working bands's repertoire; in fact, AFAIK, Miles only recorded one JC composition ("Trane's Blues"). The only member of the '55-'62 working groups to contribute originals was Miles himself.

'Cept for maybe some tunes by Evans that mysteriously appeared with Miles' name on them instead?

Whoops... forgot about "Blue in Green" and (?) "Flamenco Sketches"! You're right.

if you're talking about coltrane's band, then the average show consisted of 50% coltrane compositions.
