John B Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 I thought that was part of the fun! ← I'm not sure if a tune with that many obvious flubs is toying with the listener, mocking the original tune, actually being flubbed, or some combination thereof. Quote

sidewinder Posted July 18, 2005 Report Posted July 18, 2005 I'm part of the way through viewing the Sonny Simmons DVD and Anthony Braxton features quite prominently in interview, with very impassioned affirmatives of SS and his attitude to music and life. Have both of the 'Free America' Braxtons in my 'pending' pile, looking forward to listening to them. Quite a long time since I checked out any AB. Quote

sidewinder Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 (edited) Sonny Simmons 'The Multiple Rated X Truth - A Film About Jazz In America and the Struggle of the Musicians' (130mins - Cathode Films). Got my copy at the Downtown Music Gallery in NYC. That's the only place I've ever seen it. Edited July 19, 2005 by sidewinder Quote
Alexander Hawkins Posted July 19, 2005 Report Posted July 19, 2005 I'm quite fond of that version of 'It's a Raggy Waltz'. It clearly inspires mixed opinions, however. Nate once around linked a review at Bagatellen in which the reviewer expressly singled out the tune for criticism... I have to say, surely it's a good thing that we can find Braxton's standards controversial in some way? There's so many people churning out generic stuff over these tunes, that at least it's a change! Quote
GregK Posted August 9, 2005 Report Posted August 9, 2005 But nevertheless, Black Saint and Hat both are repositories of many, MANY classic Braxton performances that will serve well to further one's interest in this particualr artist's massive body of work. Go there! ← I just ordered my 1st Braxton Black Saint, Five Compositions (Quartet). This is going to be one expensive discographical exploration! Quote

Gary Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 This could be an exciting new release thats been mention on the Braxton Yahoo group & Rastascan site http://www.rastascan.com/ UPCOMING RELEASES FOR 2006 Anthony Braxton: Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003 Hello Braxlisters, Rastascan will release two new Braxton-related CDs in 2006: 1. Nine Compositions (DVD) 2003 (BRD 060), 6.5 hours of music featuring Taylor Ho Bynum, Greg Kelley, John Shiurba, Scott Rosenberg, Dan Plonsey, Gino Robair, Jay Rosen, Kyle Bruckmann, Liz Allbee, Justin Yang, ma++ Ingalls, and Sara.Schoenbeck. 2. John Shiurba 5x5 1.2=A (BRD 055), with Anthony Braxton, Morgan Guberman, Gino Robair, and Greg Kelley. Nine Compositions should hit the stores in the first quarter of 2006, and 5x5 1.2=A will ship in the second quarter. Thanks for listening! ginorobair http://www.rastascan.com/news.html It'll be a regular DVD, compatible with all DVD players. There will not be any video on it: it will be all music. (Okay, there might be a tiny bit of video material from the studio...depending on disc space.) For you tech-minded folks, this won't be a DVD-A, but rather, a DVD-V (the same spec used for movie releases). The resolution is 24-bit, 48 kHz. The reason we are doing this as a DVD is to avoid releasing a 7-CD box set (too expensive to make and ship), and to avoid cutting the 90-minute pieces in half. Although we don't have the final price set, it certainly isn't going to be anywhere near the cost of a 7-CD box set. Quote

Alexander Hawkins Posted December 10, 2005 Report Posted December 10, 2005 Anyone heard the new Leo BTW? Can't stop to write - in a real rush - but if you mean the London quintet recording, I haven't heard it, but was there, and it's stunning stuff. I think I scribbled some more extensive remarks somewhere or other in this thread on the days after the gig (November 2004, iirc!) Quote
7/4 Posted December 14, 2005 Author Report Posted December 14, 2005 Check it out, the lead review in this weeks VV. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jazz Consumer Guide Low Rent The real possibilities open up when it doesn't cost a bundle to pursue your muse by Tom Hull December 9th, 2005 7:05 PM Pick Hits ANTHONY BRAXTON 20 Standards (Quartet) 2003 Leo Four more CDs from the same tour that yielded last year's four-CD 23 Standards (Quartet) 2003. The bounty results from Braxton picking fresh songs each show—jazz pieces more often than the usual chestnuts, with old favorites Brubeck and Desmond most prominent. Tracks stretch out leisurely, with Kevin O'Neil's deft guitar often the highlight, and Braxton's saxes favoring the high registers. The most accessible and simply pleasurable set he's done—smart and cool. A Quote
Nate Dorward Posted December 14, 2005 Report Posted December 14, 2005 Yeah, if you're Tom Hull, reviewing a few thousand CDs a month in a sentence or three (check out his website), then you probably don't notice that it's not a very good disc/set at all. For "pleasurable" Braxton I'd go for the Arista/Bluebird Live album every time. Quote

I didn't know he had a web site (I'll take a look later). But I enjoy the recent Braxton standards. The band is tight, his playing is warped. For "pleasurable" Braxton I'd go for the Arista/Bluebird Live album every time. Ah yes...the Arista Braxton...fine music. Quote

md655321 Posted June 4, 2006 Report Posted June 4, 2006 His birthday being today helps explain the 100 tubas thing a bit more. I wonder how hard it is to get 100 jazz tubists to do a free show. Quote
