Guest ariceffron Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 ie. herbie, ron, jackie d, et al....how did hall end up being the guitar and not KB or Grant? Quote
JSngry Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Jim Hall is a bad motherfucker, that's how. Seriously, Hall's harmonic sense made him a logical choice, I'd think. Moreso than Grant, definitely, and maybe even moreso than Burrell. Hall's voicings and Herbie's are often of a similar mind, I think. And they both worked w/Sonny Rollins, remember. Now as for how the actual contracting went down (which I think is what you're really asking, right?), I don't know. Quote
Shrdlu Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 It's a bit similar to having Chuck Israels on Herbie's "My Point of View" album. Seemed like a strange choice, to me. But it worked. Quote
jlhoots Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Don't know if this really has anything to do with this thread, but Jim Hall is on a Greg Osby Blue Note with Andrew Hill on piano. Quote
.:.impossible Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Yeah, he also did the duets with Bill Evans in 1962 on Blue Note. I haven't heard Blow Up, but I imagine he was around when Herbie was coming up with the music and he probably was just top of mind as a musician that Herbie wanted to include. Quote
Joe Carter Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Let's not forget that Jim was tight with Ron Carter, who was tight with Herbie. Joe C. Quote
brownie Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Yeah, he also did the duets with Bill Evans in 1962 on Blue Note. The Bill Evans/Jim Hall date 'Undercurrent' was initially recorded for United Artists, not BN, in vinyl days. It was reissued later as a CD on BN. Quote
Shrdlu Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Let's not forget that Jim was tight with Ron Carter. Didn't they do some live duo performances in the early 70s? A friend of mine saw Ron play in NYC back then, with a guitarist. I'm not sure, but I think it was Jim. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 They did one or two more duo records for Concord. These are all verrry nice! Quote
Joe Carter Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 You can be sure they did ! That's the album that got me through college, along with Undercurrent, Jim and Bill Evans. Joe C. Quote
Alon Marcus Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 You can be sure they did ! That's the album that got me through college, along with Undercurrent, Jim and Bill Evans. Joe C. One of the best versions for St. Thomas (IMHO). Quote
DMP Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 Wait a minute... someone could actually HEAR Chuck Israels on "My Point of View?" Quote
sheldonm Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 Don't know if this really has anything to do with this thread, but Jim Hall is on a Greg Osby Blue Note with Andrew Hill on piano. ....no, it doesn't have anything to do with this thread! Quote
