Brad
I'm trying to get some information on Matthew Gee, the New York trombonist, who played a little bit with Duke and only led one session, Jazz by Gee, although he did co-lead a session with Johnny Griffin. I've tried the web but nothing shows up. The best source is AMG. If anybody has any hints, please let me know. Thanks.
JohnS
He crops up with Lou Donaldson on Blue Note. He seems to mainly a big band player, Erskine Hawkins in particular as well as the Duke. There's a small group with Joe Newman on Vanguard. Lord lists some 64 sessions. mikeweil
His friendship with Johnny Griffin developped in the R & B band of Joe Morris - "Wow! (Gee)" was his feature number, recorded on an Atlantic 78 in 1948. Elmo Hope, Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones were the rhythm section! Details on this can be found in the Elmo Hope discography on Noal Cohen's website.
