ghost of miles Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 You're welcome Ghost. I guess I should add that it looks like a prime set. I have almost all of the material already, scattered over various Bird and other CDs, but the sound is supposedly great, and it looks like a great way to experience Bird's Verve years in a continuous manner (the complete set always put me off with the massive amount of alternate takes). At least one reviewer on Amazon expressed the caveat that the Master Takes set is not truly complete--evidently Verve defined the parameters as dates led solely by Bird--hence some of the Afro-Cuban dates, "Repetition" (kind of odd, since it does show up on the "Master Takes With Strings" set), and the sides with Coleman Hawkins aren't here. In any case, if you can pick it up for free with your vouchers or at a greatly reduced price, yes, I think it would be well worth it. Lon, I believe, already has it and might be able to weigh in more effectively for or against than I. Quote
John B Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 There are some great deals to be had with the 60% off / no shipping code. Thanks for posting that! For less than $43 I got Sonny Criss- Complete Imperial Sessions (Remastered), Ornette Coleman, The Complete Science Fiction Sessions (Remastered), Kenny Dorham, 'Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia (Remastered) and Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come (Deluxe Edition) That is just over $5 a disc. Not too shabby. Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 18, 2004 Report Posted February 18, 2004 Pulled the trigger on the Parker 3 cd set and am looking forward to it. Quote
scottb Posted February 19, 2004 Report Posted February 19, 2004 Just spotted some of the latest Conns on BMG Sam Rivers, Charlie Rouse and Larry Young Why do they always seem to carry the ones I've got and not carry the one's I need? In this case I haven't got the Mobley or the Andrew Hill yet. Quote
chris olivarez Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Scott I tell you it's an evil conspiracy!!! Quote

GregK Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 I wish they'd get the rest of the Dylan SACDs in there already. Columbia House has them all but they won't let my wife join. I was going to get them all in the intro offer under her name but they are demanding bank account info, etc, making it more difficult than usual to join, so I told them I'll just give my money to someone else. chris olivarez Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 I just meandered into the BMG box sets sections and saw the Clifford Brown Blue Note-Pacific,Grant Green retrospective and Nina Simone sets all at nice prices. I'd appreciate you input as to the music itself and the overall sound quality of these sets.Thanks. Quote

I'd appreciate you input as to the music itself and the overall sound quality of these sets.Thanks. Don't have the Nina Simone, but I do have the Clifford Brown and Grant Green. These are both excellent sets. The Brown is essential, IMO. Especially at such a good price. The Green is a great set as well...unless, ofcourse, you already have most of the albums the songs are pulled from. Even if you do, I'd still say go for it at the price BMG are selling it for. Especially if you can hold out for the next sale where shipping and handling isn't applied to box sets (like they had a couple of months ago). I got these sets so cheap I almost felt like I was stealing them! Quote
Big Al Posted February 24, 2004 Author Report Posted February 24, 2004 The Green set is worth every penny, and may have you scouring in all sorts of directions to pick up the albums from which the tracks come! Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 Has anyone seen this? Hmmm... B) Quote
Tjazz Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 (edited) I've gotten vouchers from BMG for the settlement. If you bought 1-5 at regular price - you get 1 CD at 75% w/ free shipping/handling. ($4.50) Bought 6-10 - you get 2 @ 75% off. Bought 11 or more - you get 3. I will only ask for 1, since I usually cancel after fullfilling my membership. B) Edited February 26, 2004 by Tjazz Quote
Tjazz Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 My latest BMG brochure had box sets at discounted prices. Who was looking for THE COMPLETE ELLA FITZGERALD SONG BOOKS (16cd)? $88.98 (plus shipping charges & taxes) JOHN COLTRANE COMPLETE HEAVYWEIGHT ATLANTIC RECORDINGS (7CD) $44.98 SONNY ROLLINS: COMPLETE PRESTIGE (7CD) $40.98 FRANK SINATRA : COMPLETE REPRISE (20CD) $80.98 Quote

Chris, I had the Clifford Brown set and the sound was okay, but I replaced it with the individual RVG's a while back, and I like the RVG's sound better. That Nina Simone set looks interesting... Adam Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 The Nina Simone box (I assume the Verve/Philips 4 CD set) is an unequivocal delight. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Some new stuff in clearance, including CANNONBALL AND THE POLL WINNERS, Dave Douglas' A THOUSAND EVENINGS ($1.99) and Paul Desmond's PAUL DESMOND QUARTET LIVE ($3.99). Quote
GA Russell Posted February 26, 2004 Report Posted February 26, 2004 Thanks Ghost! Has anybody heard the Paul Desmond Live album? I've considered getting it, but not if it is a mere shadow of the great stuff he did for RCA. Quote
Big Al Posted February 27, 2004 Author Report Posted February 27, 2004 I had it once and it bored me to tears. Long and meandering. But for 5 bucks, that's certainly not a bad price to satisfy yer curiosity. (I just wish it hadn't cost me almost $20 to do the same! ) Quote
GA Russell Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 Thanks Al. I believe that Desmond was already ill when he made that recording, and that may have had something to do with it. Quote

I tried clicking on the link posted above and it redirects me to the sign in page and once i'm signed in i can't find any settlement pages. I have been a member off and on for 4 years, and I've bought plenty of regular priced CDs Quote
Tjazz Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 The vouchers came in the latest mailings with brochures and other junk mail. Quote
