LAL Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 There's a thread each for Hep, Classics, Frog, Timeless etc but doesn't seem to be one for what in my opinion is one of the best if not the best in reissuing hard to find (on CD at least) and obscure vintage jazz/hot dance music. I've been acquiring each item on their catalogue by order of release. Many of the sets have a fair bit of dated vocals, but worth going through just for some gems on the same disc/set - e.g. The Red Heads. The Sam Manning discs are ones I return to regularly for interesting vocal music. What are your favourite Jazz Oracle releases? There's a new one, a 2CD set compiling the best of Lud Gluskin (who?) and band in Europe. This one still carries the John R.T. Davies seal. Wonder how many more there are. Almost forgot, their excellent booklets are chock full of information and photos. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 I think I have all but the latest two cd set. A fantastic label. Favorites are the Pollocks, the New Orleans bands, the Mannings and . . . well I have a hard time picking favorites, such a great label! Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 So far I only have the Papa Celestine/Sam Morgan release and it´s great! Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 My fave: the set devoted to fellow Hoosier Jack Purvis. Quote
LAL Posted January 19, 2005 Author Report Posted January 19, 2005 My fave: the set devoted to fellow Hoosier Jack Purvis. Love the booklet detailing Jack's regular vanishing acts and antics. I actually burst into laughter reading it. But thinking about it further, it appears that Jack led a sad life. Wonder what really happened to him in his later years. The 4 volumes of The Original Indiana Five are excellent too. At their best they were probably right up there with The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, IMO. Quote
LAL Posted March 10, 2005 Author Report Posted March 10, 2005 Another new release: Wilbur Sweatman 1916-35 (2 CD Set) A compilation of pioneering recordings made by African-American clarinetist Wilbur Sweatman, a veteran of the vaudeville stage who made an important contribution to the popularization of jazz music in the late Teens and early Twenties. This set was compiled by Mark Berresford, an authority on Sweatman, and includes extensive liner notes written by Mark based on his research into Sweatman's life and music. Looking forward to this one. Quote

LAL Posted November 16, 2005 Author Report Posted November 16, 2005 I'd like to get some of these. Can anyone point in the direction of a preferred outlet? ← I've bought mostly from CDConnection.com which carries many of the titles. An incentive to order directly from Jazz Oracle is the disc BDW8047 "A Gift From The President" that comes free with each item purchased. This disc contains rare material/alternate takes. It seems worldsrecords.com offers the free disc too. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 I've gotten most of mine from Worlds. . . cduniverse as well, though they don't offer all of them for some reason. Quote
kenny weir Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 OK, I've been reading up on this label and listening to a lot of samples. Great stuff - just where my head is at. I will be orering 2-3 sets in the nexy couple of days. Any other hot tips? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 I don't recommend using steel needles. . . . Quote
kenny weir Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 (edited) Thansk for the heads up. I have the Morgan/Celestin disc, so I was at least a little aware of this label, but not really hip to the depth and excellence of their releases. Anyway, the Jack Purvis and Adrian Rollini are on their way, ordered from Worlds Records (a first for me). And, BTW, they've included the Gift From The President CD as well. jazzbo Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Worlds Records is a wonderful company I feel. Yes you pay full pop most of the time. BUT they carry these speciality labels and usually have all the material in stock. And they can get items from Storyville and other labels about the same time as the original release and generally months before they are available from other US stores. On top of that, Ren Brown is a great person to do business with in all ways. They package wonderfully as well, and their shipping rates are good. That "Gift from the President" is a wonderful disc! jazzbo Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 It's pretty good. First disc is better than the second to me. . . it seems to mainly be remastered by Ted Kendall. Sound is very good. . . a spot brighter perhaps than the previous ones but that may just be me and a system change or two. Quote

EKE BBB Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 There´s also an upcoming double CD with radio transcriptions by Eddie South. Details from worldsrecords.com "Coming Soon" section: EDDIE SOUTH AND HIS INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRA THE CHELONI BROADCAST TRANSCRIPTIONS Description (2-CD set) The material on these two discs is from the Cheloni Programs, recorded in Los Angeles. These provide the listener with a rare opportunity to hear an African-American orchestra broadcasting jazz and Latin-based dance music at lenght and in good sound from a period when, despite the high frequence of nightly live remote or studio broadcasts, there would have been few transcription opportunities for such musicians. That the intended audience was largely white is both a point and beside the point. Indeed, here, South is introduced not as the "Dark Angel Of The Violin" but as the "Angel of the Violin".
