LAL Posted January 18, 2005 Report Posted January 18, 2005 There's a thread each for Hep, Classics, Frog, Timeless etc but doesn't seem to be one for what in my opinion is one of the best if not the best in reissuing hard to find (on CD at least) and obscure vintage jazz/hot dance music. I've been acquiring each item on their catalogue by order of release. Many of the sets have a fair bit of dated vocals, but worth going through just for some gems on the same disc/set - e.g. The Red Heads. The Sam Manning discs are ones I return to regularly for interesting vocal music. What are your favourite Jazz Oracle releases? There's a new one, a 2CD set compiling the best of Lud Gluskin (who?) and band in Europe. This one still carries the John R.T. Davies seal. Wonder how many more there are. Almost forgot, their excellent booklets are chock full of information and photos. Quote

I actually burst into laughter reading it. But thinking about it further, it appears that Jack led a sad life. Wonder what really happened to him in his later years. The 4 volumes of The Original Indiana Five are excellent too. At their best they were probably right up there with The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, IMO. Quote

This compilation covers the sides recorded by Joe Robichaux and His New Orleans Rhythm Boys for Vocalion in 1933, as well as two 1929 recordings by Christina Gray featuring Robichaux's piano accompaniment. I have the Morgan/Celestin disc, so I was at least a little aware of this label, but not really hip to the depth and excellence of their releases. Anyway, the Jack Purvis and Adrian Rollini are on their way, ordered from Worlds Records (a first for me). And, BTW, they've included the Gift From The President CD as well. BUT they carry these speciality labels and usually have all the material in stock. And they can get items from Storyville and other labels about the same time as the original release and generally months before they are available from other US stores. On top of that, Ren Brown is a great person to do business with in all ways. They package wonderfully as well, and their shipping rates are good. That "Gift from the President" is a wonderful disc! Sound is very good. . . a spot brighter perhaps than the previous ones but that may just be me and a system change or two. Quote
