Jazz Kat Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 I was trying to think of really cool setups, or whatever you wanna call it, that aren't frequently used in jazz settins. Cool ones I came up with were just bass and drums just organ and drums alto flute, piano, bass, drums trombone, piano, bass, drums trombone, bass, drums Any other cool ideas? Quote
maren Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Tenor, trombone and drums -- i.e., Joey Baron's trio "BARON DOWN"!!! Tongue in Groove [Polygram 1993] Raised Pleasure Dot [New World 1994] Crackshot [Avant Records 1998] Quote
jazzypaul Posted February 11, 2005 Report Posted February 11, 2005 Larry Young did a few organ and drums duets. It actually shocks me that this doesn't happen more often as it sounds absolutely natural. At least in Larry's hands it does. There's always Paul Motian's Trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano. You never even miss the bass. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 11, 2005 Author Report Posted February 11, 2005 A soprano bass and drums trio would sound nice, especially for some free jazz. What's freeer ( ) than that combo. Quote
maren Posted February 12, 2005 Report Posted February 12, 2005 A soprano, bass and drums trio would sound nice... Steve Lacy (soprano), Jean-Jacques Avenel (bass), John Betsch (drums)... Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Author Report Posted February 12, 2005 Did Ornette Coleman ever use this? I know he had some trio recordings. Can't think of the instruments though. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Author Report Posted February 12, 2005 Yes, he does. I was talking about saxophones in general. My fault. Quote

Yup, and I was just thinking of this configuration the other day -- while listening to the Larry Young Mosaic. Have there been any organ and drums dates?? No other instruments, just those two, with enough material for an entire LP. Since organists are their own bass-players (or at least most of them should be), it makes perfect sense to me. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted February 12, 2005 Author Report Posted February 12, 2005 I believe Monk's Dream from Unity was a duet. Quote

I've been thinking about it recently. Joe's recently been working on a solo project, and I've been thinking about something of my own. Quote

scottb Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 (edited) I want this album Jim!! Get to work!! The showdown could be a three way with the Dr. and Joey D. if schedules permit. The horns MUST include a trombone and preferably Lou Donaldson an alto. HELL YEAH!! Edited February 15, 2005 by scottb Quote

Organist Rhoda Scott uses this format quite frequently, as did Milt Buckner and Jo Jones. You might want to check these : http://www.djangomusic.com/item_music.asp?...sid=&mediatype= or http://www.djangomusic.com/item_music.asp?...sid=&mediatype= Edited February 15, 2005 by michel devos Quote

Jazz Kat Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 Pretty soon I will be playing with just a bass player, with me on guitar; dont believe I have seen that too much. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 guitar, bass, talking bout setups. Just a guitar and a bass isnt the MOST common format in a jazz setting. Quote

I am serious about an organ/drums thing but it would probably lean more towards the funk side. I'd want to use Randy on two tracks, the drummer I play with in my R&B band (who is a funky motherfu...shut yo' mouth!) and maybe a track or two with another friend of mine who plays the hell out of the congas. Maybe a cross-country collaboration with a buddy that lives in San Fran. That would be cool! I've been running the idea through my head for awhile now. If the next organissimo record doesn't start happening soon, I'll start working on it. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 Thats great! You guys are finding jazz groups and dates with guitar and bass, (and drums for some reason which I did not say) but my initial comment was that it was not COMMON. Did not say never, just not as common as a tenor, piano, bass, and drums setup. Quote

Did not say never, just not as common as a tenor, piano, bass, and drums setup. Apparently it's common for guitar players. BTW: a bass player called me last night, I think we're going to start playing together, guitar and bass. Quote
