Big Al Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 I like what the lady who played Lafawnduh (sp?) said, during the documentary about the filming of the "Wedding of the Century:" that this really is a family movie. There's no gratuitous sex, violence, maybe one or two swear words. Medjuck's right on the money about the kids liking this movie. I had lunch with my third-grade son awhile back, right after he and I had seen the movie, and he and I started quoting lines from the movie. Pretty soon, other kids who'd seen the movie were gathering around to join the fun. Another time, our sixth-grade neighbor and I were shooting some hoops, and I think we managed to quote the entire movie! Not verbatim, but just favorite scene after favorite scene. And just to give you an idea of what kind of phenomenon we're dealing with here, my wife works retail and one day, found on the computer in one of the sections of the store, a yellow sticky-note with the words "Do the chickens have large talons" on it. Sure enough, it was two of the kids (late teens/early twenties) who'd been posting the notes! Quote
Eric Posted February 16, 2005 Report Posted February 16, 2005 (edited) This is one of those films that really separates critics from young filmgoers. Critics just don't get that kids aren't just laughing at Napoleon -- they identify with him. Yes. Well put, and perhaps the reason why I think this movie is a small triumph of sorts. Agree, my kids had been bugging me for weeks before this came to Blockbuster to rent it. I read some reviews which generally seemed to describe it as a sad look at a dysfunctional family ... But my kids were right ... it is fun and triumphant ... with virtually no reliance on fart jokes Edited February 16, 2005 by Eric Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Up for late bloomers as I just saw this over the weekend. Highest of thumbs here! Our fourth grader thought it was "stoopid" ... she's, of course, got a lot to learn. "Grandma broke her cockix" Napoleon reading the Letterman Top Ten Quote
Late Posted April 11, 2005 Author Report Posted April 11, 2005 Napoleon reading the Letterman Top Ten Funny! Strange that you should bump this thread back up — I just re-rented the DVD yesterday! Went out to dinner with my folks last night. It was my mom's 66th birthday. I caught her saying HECKYEAH!. (No joke!) Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 My wife even loved this movie! GOSH! All you people who are bad-mouthing it are only totalling ruining my life! Quote
