Ravi Coltrane

A few weeks ago I bought the album 'Mad 6' by Ravi Coltrane, who is of course the son of the great John Coltrane. This is a pretty good album, and one that I enjoy listening to frequently.

I have done a little reserach, and I guess it must be difficult being the son of John Coltrane.

So anyone listened to this album or are familier with Ravi's music?

Che.

Oh and by the way, if you have already discussed this thread forgive me, I did try and serach and I would not want to be late for the party B-)

I thought he was in the "good but one of many camp" until I heard him on Alice's new album. If he can stay in that zone, he'll have something to say that needs to be heard from here on out. Not necessarily "innovative", but there's some emotional meat in his playing there that I'd not heard before, and that is rare amongst so much of today's jazz. Stay tuned, I suppose.

What is the album you refer to, with Alice Coltrane and what are your thoughts on this album. Have you listened to the 'Mad 6' album?

TRANSLINEAR LIGHT

I like it.

Yes.

His "Cresent" on Translinear Light is similar in mood to "Dear Alice" on the new In Flux. "Dear Alice" takes things a bit further out emotionally. Yeah, I go for that.

Boy did he get panned for his concert in Chicago this past summer -- Howard Reich didn't appreciate the piece the Jazz Insitute of Chicago commissioned from Mr. Coltrane.

Anyone actually hear that performance?

Anyone happen to catch Ravi, Alice and Branford M. in the recent concert (as reported on All About Jazz)?

I saw Ravi a couple of times last summer with Rashied Ali and Reggie Workman. I was very surprised at how unlike his father he sounded (not that sounding like JC is a problem :D), and how personal his improvisations seemed. His lines, sense of time, and tone all came across to these ears as coming from a very mature and thoughtful artist. A damn nice guy, to boot.

Why does "che" need reinforcement for his pleasures. Is he trying to draw us out? :g

He's a slippery carp.

Just tryin to be accepted :P

Now about Ravi Coltrane B-)

I have several Ravi albums (ok, three) and I enjoy them all. His latest (In Flux) is excellent. The Alice Coltrane album is great too. :tup:tup

I'm a fan!

The Alice Coltrane album got some great reviews, I did not know he had another album out. I will go and check this out.

I'd love to hear some board member feedback on his new one "In Flux". It seems to be getting really good reviews.

Do you know when this album was released?

Has not formed a solid opinion yet on Ravi, but, based on his playing on his own FROM THE ROUND BOX -- on which, BTW, I think trumpetere Ralp Alessi sounds pretty darn good -- I hear more of a Wayne Shorter influence than anything else.

Of course, said album is almost 5 years old by now.

And, while I can't recommend this record whole-heartedly, it is nonetheless an interesting effort...

Hank Mobley tunes, two tenor set-up: Ravi and Craig Handy. Plus Cindy Blackman.

I remember first hearing him round about 15 years ago in Elvin's band and thinking that he wasn't playing much, but what a name. However in the last five years I've heard him a number of times live and have been only impressed at the giant strides he'd made in terms of developing his own voice and chops and feel and time; he'd really come into his own and sounded like one of the best tenor players on the block.

However I caught him just a couple weeks ago at the Zinc and had the feeling that I was not really hearing art so much as yet another speedy but too standard jazz gig; nothing that moved me in an otherwise quite competent set.

I read an article once about his playing and it has been difficult at times to move beyond the fact that he is the son of John Coltrane, as you suggest he has now emerged/is emerging from this shadow.

Ravi has a new one that was released yesterday:

Ravi Coltrane - In Flux (Savoy Jazz)

— Ravi Coltrane (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Luis Perdomo (piano); Drew Gress (bass); E.J. Strickland (drums); Luisito Quintero (percussion)

Anyone seen it?

EJ is a phenomenal drummer and perfectly sweet bloke. He was on the gig at Zinc last month and sounded great.

Has EJ played with anyone else before Ravi's group?

Che.

Sure, EJ plays around a lot: Wallace Roney, Jeremy Pelt, Mulgrew Miller, Vincent Herring, Anthony Wonsey, Russell Malone and with his brother Marcus, a fine tenor player. The killing Russian bassist Boris Kozlov, long the Mingus Big Band bassist, is in EJ's band, called the EJ Strickland project. They've been at the Jazz Gallery of late.

I really didn't have anything that featured him until "Translinear Light" and I really liked him on that. I'll have to check him out more in the future. It can't be the easiest thing in the world carrying that name and those expectations.

I guess this is one of the reasons why it has taken him time to emerge.
