tranemonk Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 okay I know we talked about this in a thread a few weeks ago but I finally just finished listening to the set... WOW!!!! I only had one previous CD of Pepper and this set was fab!!! Just swinging from Track 1 through the last cut... I do disagree with people who constantly say he was the ONLY altoist who was able to develop a non-Charlie Parker sound.... I, for one, am a HUGE Jackie McLean fan who also developed his own unique sound.... (Try and find that box set... Fabulous!!! ) ... but returning to Pepper... Clearly he did have his own unique sound.... I agree with the previous thread about "interesting" (being kind) non-Cuscuna liner notes... Don't know what got into that guy????? Anyway... I just want to say this is a great set... Just out of curiousity... was any of this stuff OOP before the Select set???? thanks and fully recommended.... Quote
bluesForBartok Posted March 15, 2005 Report Posted March 15, 2005 I don't own the set but I have all the original CDs. The version of Summertime w/ Carl Perkins floors me everytime. Sounds like he's crying at times in the solo. Quote
Claude Posted April 10, 2005 Report Posted April 10, 2005 The Art Of Pepper - Omega Sessions: The Complete Master Takes (2 Unissued Tracks) (Definitive Records ) This CD presents the complete master takes from the legendary 1957 "Omega Sessions". The first eleven tracks were originally marketed on two 7 1/2 ips reel-to-reel stereophonic tapes by the Omegatape label, between 1957 and 1958. "Summertime" was not issued until the early 1980's on Lp on the Nadja label in Japan. The two previously unreleased tracks appear here for the first time. However, both tracks are missing from the so-called "The Complete Art Pepper Aladdin Recordings" marketed by the Mosaic and Blue Note record labels. http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/record_po...?record_id=3886 Quote
mikeweil Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 (edited) Hard to believe Cuscuna missed out on something, although this has happened before. Has anyone heard the Definitive set? Are they really different takes? And has anyone compared the sound of the Mosaic Select with that of the previous CD issues? Edited April 11, 2005 by mikeweil Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 11, 2005 Report Posted April 11, 2005 Pretty sure Cuscuna has said elsewhere that those takes were considered unusable. Quote
couw Posted April 12, 2005 Report Posted April 12, 2005 Pretty sure Cuscuna has said elsewhere that those takes were considered unusable. Clunky asked and got the answer: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...ndpost&p=327743 Quote
